Are these ball end strings?

No. These strings need to be tied at the back of the bridge and at the tuning pegs. Look on youtube for instructions on how to do this. It's very easy.

How low is the tension compared with eg daddario ej45?

When new - fills the same. EJ45 fill softer when worn, 520B stay the same.
