The Butterfly Lion

This little book is a big treasure. The story is so compelling that I read the whole book in one sitting with ease and tremendous enjoyment. Mr. Morpurgo weaves adventure, suspense, love, and magic together in a beautiful mix that completely takes the reader into another dimension. I wasn't even aware of the world around me while I was reading it! I lost all track of time and was completely absorbed by the story.I highly recommend getting the 2011 Collector's Edition, which comes elegantly hardbound and with evocative illustrations by Christian Birmingham. (Note: I do not know if Mr. Birmingham's illustrations are also included in other editions of the book.) Between Mr. Morpurgo's magical prose and Mr. Birmingham's haunting illustrations, I felt as if I could see a film of the story in my mind while I was reading. This book would make an excellent movie; think of Winter's Tale meets Born Free and War Horse -- and beyond.All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend The Butterfly Lion to story lovers young and old alike. Give yourself a couple of hours to curl up with this book and be transported by this moving, lyrical, haunting, magical tale. You'll be tremendously glad you did.

A really Good read for kids and adults and a great intro to the style of this writer.

An emotional story..well written with believable characters...very good story..I would recommend reading this book. The story of a boy living in Africa with his parents. He is later sent to school where he proceeds to run away. He meets an older woman who tells him a story of a boy who had a pet lion cub, and this boy also runs away from his school when he was young. The story has a good ending.

So worth the read for all ages! Great story. The younger readers may need to understand the history of it.

I loved it all the way through I had no dislike in it. I would recommend it to confident readers because some words are quite hard to read.

This is the most amazing book i have ever read I have read 2 of Michael Morpurgo's books and I am looking forward to reading more of them.

My 8year old is a big fan of the writer ....she loves this book

The story is written in such a way so that I became attached to the characters, each unique in their own way. It made the ending hit harder too. I just felt this sense of wonder from the great bond of the boy and the lion.
