Just an early documentary.
Probably one of those "Hey, let's get something other than the 'Farewell' documentary onto the market" releases; but interesting nevertheless. Commentary by Jack, Ginger, Eric, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Pete Brown, Alex Van Halen, John Mayall etc, other than the 'I Feel Free' promo film, the footage is from the Albert Hall Farewell gig. You've also got the Jimi Hendrix Cream dedication from the Lulu TV show where Jimi stopped 'Hey Joe' to play 'Sunshine Of Your Love' as a mark of respect at Cream's then current demise.Watching this again, though, and being a little 'trainspotter-ish' about the Farewell gig, maybe the BBC filmed both the afternoon matinee gig as well as the evening performance? My previous review comments on other Cream video and DVD releases prompt me to reach this conclusion. I don't remember Eric in an orange jacket playing a Gibson Firebird at the evening show, yet plainly, he has the same red shirt beneath it. For the evening show which I attended, if memory serves, he didn't wear the jacket, just the red shirt, and played a Gibson ES330. Very transpotter-ish, but I am a Cream fanatic, so did the BBC film both shows? If so, there's more of a legacy than previously considered. With apparently little Cream live footage available other than the Farewell shows, this documentary seems to have been brought into existence simply to put something more about them onto the previously somewhat devoid market. But hey, fans won't be complaining. Okay, if you have the Farewell release then yes, it's just a re-hash of some of the songs with interviews, but with so little (at this time) out there on the market, then who are we to complain? For more 'up-to-date' Cream, try the 2005 reunion shows DVD or the 'Classic Artists Cream' documentary - if you're younger you could well appreciate them all the more.
