It is such an unusual style of teaching/learning. You are the 'silent' guest at a tutorial from Thomas to two students. You answer all the questions as they do - and make the same mistakes.He is very clever in the way in which he builds on what has gone before with frequent jump backs to things that had perviously been instilled. He builds knowledge of language structure in a non-grammatical approach.I think, like many other reviewers, that you may need to learn the language through more conventional methods whilst using this in parallel. I learn through my eyes and as a result, although I can read pretty well, I am hopeless at conversation and more importantly, understanding what someone has said to me. Michel cures all of that. The constant repetition as he builds on what has gone before is just what someone like me needs.There is a lot of humour in the teaching which makes the course so enjoyable.He brings amazing insights into the way a language has developed from its early beginnings and how it relates to English giving real understanding that you simply do not get from conventional language courses. It works and works very well.He is expensive, but it is worth every penny, cent, Euro or whatever you buy in.I am an avid fan.

We have tried several French courses but without doubt Michel Thomas is the very best system of learning and the best teacher. The recordings were made some years ago with less than state-of-the-art equipment so that the sound quality could be better, but this is a very minor snag,

I admit that this very expensive set does say "Michel Thomas" and 'method' in smaller print on the cover. I bought it mistakenly thinking it was Thomas himself doing the teaching but it is a woman with an incredibly irritating little voice. So irritating in fact that I have given up on the course entirely! I may have another bash one day but after being subjected to the dreadful American woman on Michel Thomas's first course, I believed that it would just be the man himself but I was wrong. Nowhere does it even state the name of the woman giving the course which is strange.....

Michel Thomas seems to waste no time in improving all the areas of difficulty for intermediate learners (including me) Already it's helping me improve my grammar and pronounciation with pronouns and word order etc... Very helpful so far!

This is THE way to learn another language without living in the country. No written work, no remembering, no stress. Michel can at times be a little forceful, but he's always very human and his method is excellent. There's an Englishman and an American lady on the CDs, they start from scratch and Michel leads them through a very carefully planned, logical introduction to the French language. After World War II Michel worked for for the Special Operations Executive and debriefed Nazi concentration camp operators. He was an amazing guy, spoke umpteen languages perfectly and discovered a great method to teach people. Woody Allen, Grace Kelly, Eddie Izzard... all learned French with Michel. This method genuinely works.

A friend recommended Michel Thomas to me and I'm so glad she did. As someone with a busy lifestyle, this is great for learning as you go, as it only requires you to listen, but you still practice the grammar and learn how to spell it. Teaching you little bit at a time so you build on what you know, allowing you to think out sentences of your own. Just exchange your music for this and learn bit at a time. It is a bit pricey, but so far it's worth the money, as I would have spent the same on evening course if not more and wouldn't have the time for it.

I must give at least three stars because the Michel Thomas foundation course and advanced cource are both excellent and inspirational, however the "new" range of "Total French" and "Perfect French" is simply the foundation course and advanced course repackaged and remarketed. Do not buy this if you already have the original courses because you will waste your money as I did, this is not explained anywhere in the Amazon listing so I was very disappointed wasting money on material I already had.If of course you've never done the original courses the content is simply excellent and well worth the money, it's the simplest most painless method of effectively learning the grammar and structure of a difficult language.Also there will still be a huge amount of vocabulary that you will not know, the vocabulary added to this course doesn't help that much because it mainly concentrates on cognates etc so the french words that you are taught you could easily work out yourself because they are mainly the ones that are the same or very similar in English, but again for the structure and method of forming sentences this is well worth buying

As with many middle-aged English people I have tried to learn French off and on for about 40 years (well, since junior school). Given the effort and the frequency I travel to France, the results were appauling. However, at last, with the Michel Thomas "Total" and particularly the "Perfect" French course, I really believe I have achieved a break-through. An excellent course. No unnecessary academic coverage of verb conjugations you will never use in reality. Very practical, very intuitive and really helped me to get a grip on the language and to recognise the patterns. I actually enjoyed learning.
