Great Works: Encounters with Art

Impressive detailed analyses of famous and lesser-know masterpieces. Highly recommended.

I am an art critic, which means I see a lot of art - and; I read a lot about it. This, I must say, is the best book on art I have read in a very long time. Short texts in a clear, and at the same time rich language, makes the art itself speak out to the reader.

I so much enjoyed Michael Glover's column in the sadly departed Independent newspaper, it was a joy to discover this compendium. His erudition entertains and illuminates. A great buy or gift for anyone who appreciates art.

The essays are rather short-winded, if to the point and well-expressed.

The blurb on the jacket praises the writing. The text is very poor. Partly misinformed and very thin. It reads like a subway rag.
