Do you need special strings for it?

It comes pre-strung. It was actually pretty well tuned as well. The strings are standard wire-wrapped bass strings. Plays and sounds great. I don't have large hands, so this was a blessing to me to have this form factor in a bass.

What is the overall length of the instrument and the widest part of the body?

I'm not 100% sure. Got it for my wife's cousin that's in a wheel chair. He said it's very comfortable and light. He loves it.
