So as soon as I saw a deal, I hopped on it... (yeah I see what I did there. I'm not sorry). And waited with bated breath. I was really excited and maybe even oversold it to myself. Then I got it. It felt like Christmas Day! I grabbed the box, hastily opened it up (using my Elementium II) and examined the packaging... Nice! Then I carefully opened it - ooooh I can't wait! And there it was! Just.. sorta, tossed in there. I honestly had expected an experience more akin to getting a nice watch. But no big deal so I brushed it off. I have a Benchmade! So I picked it up, and had one of those moments, like when you pick up a soda can you think is full. Whoop! I lifted too hard. It popped up out of my hand, and dropped right onto the floor. This thing weighs a meaningful fraction less than any other EDC I own. So I picked it up and gently admired it. The texture of the handle feels nice and grippy... but it caves a little under your grip... or at least feels like it does to me. But that's all good - here's the moment I get that much loved buttery opening....... It opened about a quarter of the way before I had to really push on it. And the AXIS release... Well it released, but the knife didn't go anywhere. There was no way I was going to be able to use this single handed. What the hell had I really gotten myself into? So I started examining, and woking the blade manually back and forth. Maybe it just needed to be broken in a bit. You know what's coming next. I lost my focus for half a second and just barely - and I mean angles breath - barely tapped my pinky against the business end. "Nahh - I missed it." is what I said to myself, moments before I absolutely needed a band-aid. So while I had the time to think while patching myself up and cussing a lot, I couldn't figure out what had went so wrong. Was it a knockoff? Was it all just youtube hype and marketing? But the second I saw that knife perform (gross, I know), I knew I was looking at this the wrong way. I'm the kind of person who loves to tinker, build, and generally make my tools work for me. So that's exactly what I did. I sat down at my bench, and I stripped apart my brand new $200 knife. And that's when it hit me. I wasn't mad anymore - I was really really happy. I just bought a knife that's literally designed to make my way. They provide *very* good steel, and bits that come apart easily.... once you figure out how they specifically work. They don't go to together without a bit of trial and error - so wear a cutting glove! It's a wonderful experience! Even with this baseline - I could tune it and make behave the exact way I want. Glorious! So the reality is that I actually bought a tool that made me smarter for the effort. I still don't like the weight, so I got Flytanium scales for it because I'm apparently a fanboy now. Those just arrived today... man, I'm in love. This knife has been a joy to work with, and the tinkering and tuning is every bit as valuable as the steel and the lifetime support. I think they could use a modification or two on their packaging and presentation. I think the knife is too light for me. And the general state of the knife, if mine is representative of the average, is meh when you first interact with it. I think I'd have been just as happy ordering this knife as a kit. They are a very personal tool that you rely on and develop a pretty personal relationship with. I have had cheap knives and expensive knives and everything in between. Over time you realize that a cheap knife is not only not as nice but in many cases can be dangerous. So I tend to buy middle range to slightly expensive now and keep it longer. I only buy American made now not because China is evil or any other country is good or bad but because I like buying something from a smaller and more local company that pays attention to details. You get what you pay for is really true. This is my first Benchmade, before this I have had Kershaw US made and Zero Tolerance as my main EDC knives. I have found US made Kershaw knives to be a great value and Zero Tolerance to be just great. So this Benchmade was a shock when I first got it. For $130 I was expecting full stainless steel tangs along the grivory handles and that is not what I got. So I was going to return this knife because even though it is not clearly stated that this knife has a nice stainless steel blade attached to a plastic handle that has metal tang that attaches to the the blade about less than half way. When you grab the plastic handle it will flex under pressure which gives a bad impression. It seems like you could just break the handle yourself if enough pressure is applied which gives a very weak impression of durability and long term strength. I know this is an entry level knife from Benchmade offering superior blade steel and the reason the knife does not cost more and is very light is because of the construction as I mentioned earlier. I decided to keep the knife because I really like the light weight and the blue grivory handle is actually very pleasant to grab. I also like the blue anodized bolts that keep the knife together and the thumbstuds that are also light blue anodized aluminum. Once I made that decision I thought to myself this will just not be my heavy duty knife. Since I have had it the blade is really impressive for the price. I don't think there is another American made knife using this blade steel at this price. If Benchmade did not offer a good warranty then I would have returned the knife but since they cover it for life under normal conditions I figure that the grivory handle despite not having full metal tangs is still strong enough to get the job done and if I have a problem I am sure Benchmade will take care of me. Why this knife is a keeper in any collection? It is really light which makes carrying it for long periods of time in various conditions very pleasant. The grivory handle is very tactile and grippy and you can choose your color so that is great! The blade and how everything is put together is why I buy American higher quality and cost knifes. Yes it is over $100 and has a plastic handle but it is perfectly assembled and build quality is excellent for this price. If you want a more serious configuration and don't mind spending more then I would highly recommend getting a custom built model from Benchmade. They have full metal tang models with grivory handle and you can choose accessories and colors. If you want to save money then Amazon is going to be your best deal. All I can say is give it a try if you are doubtful.
