UFO finds new life in the BluRay format
The series looks phenomenal in the BluRay format. There are times watching this when you feel you are actually watching a Bond FILM, viewing the series in this format. BBC Resources did a wonderful job restoring/cleaning up the series when making HD masters back 10 odd years ago or so and the series really does find new life/shines in the BluRay format. Was very wise and forward thinking of Lew Grade and Gerry Anderson to film this series back in the day in 35mm, securing this series' place in history as a true classic of the genre and keeping the show alive for future generations. The BluRay format really brings out DETAIL and shows that level of painstaking care Gerry and his team were noted for even in the SuperMarionation days. Having seen these episodes numerous times over the years and owning the 2002/3 DVD releases was amazed to see details that I had never really noticed before. For example, in Episode 1,"Identified": the coloured lights flashing on Mark Bradley in the Interceptor (shades of Bowman in the pod in 2001); the red and yellowish colours coming from the crashed/underwater UFO; a slight but prominent scar on the left side of Peter Gordeno's face whilst flying Sky1; you can literally see the individual hairs in the Moonbase girls' wigs; even Alec Freeman's wink to the lovely SHADO operative upon entering the SHADO bunker is more clear. Some talk online about the transfer being too bright and I did notice some odd hum in the audio bottom end towards the end of Identified at least. Comparing from light to dark settings on the HDTV, the show did seem a little more stronger visually with a slightly darker setting. Comes w/ multipaged book (!) and the box art is the best ever done for the series. As mentioned in other reviews, the disc holders are a bit odd and one wonders whether they will hold up to repeated maneuvering. Network is to be commended for putting some effort into this release (Now, can we have a restored, remastered version of the New Avengers from 35mm, please, Network?). See UFO again, for the 1st time.(2018): A further note on the blurays regarding soundtrack: As George Lucas said, a film's sound/sound design is 80% of the viewing experience. If you set your Receiver to DTS to play the sound of these blurays through the DTS decoder, you will get the best possible sound. The DTS sound is really a VAST improvement over the mono track or anything in standard Dolby as DTS has a higher dynamic range/sampling rate (if you can set your player or Receiver's audio sample rate to 96k, do so). In fact, the DTS track may be a bit too muscular (those MiniMoke Shado Transport vehicles have much more "weight" in the soundtrack now; the SHADO Mobiles will literally rock your house if you are using a sub or two. A couple of other of examples of the improved sound here: the Main Titles - Barry Gray's exciting theme has excellent dynamic range, is very powerful in the bass-end and, frankly, kicks arse on these blurays; it's great to hear this fast-paced-action theme in such a strong presentation. A couple of episode-specific, improved sound examples from one of the best UFO episodes, "Timelash": towards the beginning of this episode, notice when the UFO attacks Straker and Col Lake in Straker's car, and at one point flies overhead off screen toward camera and, during this, the sound pans with the UFO to the back surrounds (if you have them and your system is set to DTS Neo 6.1 or a 7.1 setting) and it really is like the UFO has just flown overhead over you - this gives a more immersive experience to viewing these episodes and is like watching a feature film. Also, the chase scene with the SHADO Minimokes, Straker and Lake pursuing Patrick Allen around Pinewood - good panning effects following the action and use of back surrounds and some good low end presence for the vehicles. In short, Network has put some effort and thought into doing the surround soundtrack. Now, the explosions, a highlight of any Anderson production, are stand out - they are BOND FILM style explosions that finally have powerful sound to match Derek Meddings' superb spfx shots. The UFO exploding towards the very end of Timelash will almost rock the house with a subwoofer connected and may alarm close-by neighbors :). Again, this equates to a more immersive, feature-film like viewing experience watching these episodes. DTS is the way to play/hear these discs. So, not only see these episodes again for the first time in the new format, but hear them as well for the first time in DTS. UFO has a bit more muscle now in the sound dept. which is entirely appropriate for what is, essentially, an action-based/SF war series.

The Aliens Have Landed
Gerry & Sylvia Anderson's First foray into live action TV UFO finally Takes To The skies in an excellent High Definition Transfer. often cited as a serious science fiction series contender To The likes of Star Trek or The Invaders The cream of British Talent in front and behind The cameras managed To create a Truly and believable Television series. popular character Actor Ed Bishop stars as commander straker in command of The mysterious organisation SHADO out To combat Alien Threats To The world. Building on Their successful puppet series The Andersons created a futuristic look for The show who could forget The Glamorous moonbase Girls in Their stunning silver catsuits and Those unforgettable purple wigs. being a Gerry Anderson show The series was filled with many futuristic vehicles and crafts launched in space The fabulous interceptors and below The waves The incredible submarine Sky 1 capable of launching into The sky To Thwart alien attacks. for The Time it was made The series was filled with breathtaking action scenes That would rival any blockbuster science fiction series Today. UFO comes with a wealth of special features some not all carried over from The previous DVD releases. audio commentary by Gerry Anderson on The pilot episode Identified newly added for This Blu-ray release a respective look back on The making of The series featuring archive interviews with Ed Bishop and Gerry Anderson with surviving cast members Wanda Ventham and Ayesha Bough. A short Documentary looking at The Girls of UFO as some of The female Guest stars on The show recalling Their memories Actress Jane Merrow recalling stripping down To her underwear for The episode The Responsibility Seat. while some of The other girls comparing Their roles To The women of Star Trek surprisingly series regular Gabrielle Drake is not featured in this. The usual mound of photo galleries are plentiful with This release everything you really need To see from The all UFO fandom an in depth book on The making of The series rounds off an impressive collection. My only little niggle along with The book it makes it a pretty Tight box set The Disc's are only housed in a carboard casing you really need To Take care when your inserting your book and The Disc's back into The main outer box That you Don't damage The carboard casing. That said This is still an impressive five star collection. I am actually eating a bit of Humble pie with This review I said when I purchased The DVD release of This series That I would be a bit reluctant To upgrade ? it's worth The upgrade as it now gives us The Definitive version of This Cult TV Classic.

Gerry Anderson's ' Empire Strikes Back'
Gerry Anderson's ' Empire Strikes Back' - a series of downbeat endings. The transition from marionettes to live action produced an adult themed TV show that was ahead of the curve of 70s TV and films with conflicted characters bitter-sweet 'victories' that frequently questioned the human cost of war. Smoking and drinking was an everyday part of a day at the office, as was Col Freeman's eye for the ladies. And yet somehow some TV regions ended up trying to market it to children on Saturday mornings backed up by bubblegum cards and Dinky toys. The Network Blu-ray (Nov. 2016) edition is a definite improvement in terms of picture and audio quality. It carries over many of the extras from the previous DVD releases - but I have to say the new 'features' are a not a great selling point,Ok there aren't that many surviving main cast members to call upon but even so this is just a long set of trivial behind the scenes anecdotes padded out with a couple of guest stars recollections. The whole presentation feels very amateurish and drawn out.The disc packaging is a let down - plastic edge clip cases that are fiddly to snap in and out totally obscure the contents list. The greatest addition is the 'door-stop' of a book - Andrew Pixley excels with a comprehensive guide to the series.5/5 for picture and the book but minus one for the disc packaging and p-poor 'new' feature.

itv Studios\Network Blu-ray is excellent!!!
Have the older A&E Season 1 and 2 sets which is very good (Digitally Enhanced), but he newer itv Studios\Network Blu-ray is sharper, brighter and colors pop out. The contrast between darker and lighter scenes is better. Some scenes on the old A&E were too dark while the itv\Network is easier on the eyes. Plus navigating the newer Blu-ray set is easier. Highly recommend the itvStudios\Network U.F.O set!!
