Wald582 Folding Rear Mounted Bike Basket - Folding in Silver - 12.75 x 7.25 x 8.5

SOLID
Installed two of these on my Axiom rear rack and have been using them for the past week. Here are my early impressions. The PROS:Inexpensive-looking (Compared to pannier bags or other solution). You can leave these on your bike and I doubt anyone would go through the trouble of stealing them. Especially if they're scuffed up.Lightweight and collapsible. When you're not transporting cargo, they stay put tightly and out of the way. The locking mechanism seems crude, but it works. Two baskets carry a week's worth of groceries.Surprisingly quiet when riding in either open or closed position. I was expecting worse. The closed position is silent even over bumps. The open position also behaves very well when nothing is being carried. Minimal rattles. When items are in the baskets, the effect often baffles the few rattles further. The SO-SO:The included mounting hardware isn't as bad as most reviewers make it out to be, although I think there may have been a revision with my recent purchase. (August 2015). I ended up using only two of the three included brackets because the included screws were a bit too short to use with my thick Axiom rack at the lower mounting point. I ended up reinforcing the baskets to the rack at 5 additional points with black zip-ties. My baskets are black, so it still looks super clean and I'm confident the baskets are secure.Although the baskets seem to be able to carry a good amount of volume and weight, the folding short sides do play around a little bit while riding with the baskets in the open position. Not a huge concern, but worth noting. Also worth mentioning is that the baskets seem about 10% in real life than they do in the photos. This will vary with individual perception I guess.Strapping bungee cords to keep your gear in place is obviously super easy, but if you have some of the heavier duty cords (like i use to secure my NY Kryptonite lock to the rack), it might put stress on the baskets. I recommend using lighter gauge bungees or bungee nets to strap everything in nicely. I'm thinking of also DIYing an additional hinged "top cap" to fold over the front when not in useThe CONS:Not waterproof (Obviously), but I never ride in the rain, so this doesn't matter to me. I guess a waterproof bag could be placed in these for those that need that function. No quick release option. Once these are on your rack, they are most likely going to be a pain to take off, so I've decided to just leave them on permanently and just take the rack off the bike completely with these attached when I just want to ride light for fun.OVERALL:The most inexpensive out-of-the-box option for extra bike storage. No frills and super functional. Not very theft worthy at all. Mounting may take some creativity, but once they're on your rack, they're solid. Don't hesitate and pull the trigger.NYC rider

Bought my first Wald basket 20 years ago. Just added a second one.
I bought my bike to commute back and forth to campus 20 years ago. One of the things I added onto it was a folding basket for my backpack. Well fast forward to today, and I am again using the same bike to commute. I keep wishing I had a second basket to put my shopping in, so I did a search and found this - the same company that made my old basket! I like these as they hold quite a bit, and when not in use fold up out of the way. The biggest change I can see between the two is they made the latch to close the basket smaller so it is easier to use - a much needed fix (see picture). As for my old basket, other than some oxidation, it has held up fine.

Simple:Does the job. It's quite snug, and is resilient (I'm a heavy user, and my bike is my only means of transportation)Result:I'm happy.Tips and Tricks:I've mounted two of these baskets on my Topeak Explorer Bike Rack , and they work perfectly on my Schwinn Men's 700C Hybrid Bicycle . As other users have mentioned already, you HAVE TO buy separate hose clamp or you won't be able to install it on your bike. I used 5 of these cheap Precision Brand M4S Micro Seal, Miniature All Stainless Worm Gear Hose Clamp, 7/32" - 5/8" (Pack of 10) for each basket. As one user mentioned, the basket-closing hooks are really really difficult to move. He went on recommending buying mini bungee cords. However, I recommend oiling up the hook, and they will get easily fixed and movable. It worked for me just fine.On a separate note, for some bicycles, including mine, the default Topeak mounting arms are too short. I ended up buying these Topeak Extra Long Mounting Arms for Explorer and Tourist Rack , and they work like a charm.

5 stars for this basket in silver, but don't buy white or black
I have this basket in silver on one bike and in white on another bike. I'd give the silver version 5 stars, but I'd only give the white version 2-3 stars. Why the difference? The thick white coating makes it almost impossible to move the catch that holds the basket shut. Even when the basket is open and the catch should move freely, I can barely get the catch to move! From other reviews, it sounds like the black basket suffers from the same problem.Installing can be easy or hard depending on what kind of rack you're attaching it to. If the included hardware doesn't fit your rack, a hose clamp (under $1 at your local hardware store) should do the trick, or you could use zip ties. Once you get it installed, it's easy to use... if you can get the catch to work. So buy the silver one, unless you plan to leave the basket open all the time.

Needs better fixings
I bought these because I have a folding bike and needed a basket/bag that would also fold. I have tried them and they work great, I can fold my bike with no problems. They are also very handy for just dropping your shopping or work bags etc into with no fuss. Unfortunately, the fixings they supply are rubbish. They are not big enough to fit around my rack and the baskets, despite having "bigger and updated fixings" I ended up ditching the brackets and used plastic cable ties instead, which I have found to be strong enough. The manufacturer should be looking at supplying a much easier way to attach them to any rack by now.
