Incredibly moving
I bought this after reading a piece in The Guardian by Robin Robertson about how the project came about. This triggered memories of a visit to Lewis and Harris, talking to people there about their family histories, visiting a local museum and its displays about the diaspora, and subsequent readings about The Clearances...The album itself, being settings of Robertson's poems inspired by a visit to St Kilda arranged by Alisdair Roberts and played and, mostly, sung by him and a selection of excellent Scottish musicians (including an appearance by Robin Williams), is wonderful, very sensitively played and sung throughout. The stand out, the centre piece of the album, its emotional heart, is Robertson himself reciting Leaving St Kilda. For me this one alone is worth the price of admission: no eye in the house left dry...Beautiful and moving modern folk music.ETA I have just returned from the Outer Hebrides, which included sitting on a shore on North Uist looking out at St Kilda and Boreray off on the horizon...The closing lines of "Exodus" ran through my head as I looked out..."We are all sure-footed, But we fall"

Beautiful
Could anything capture the magic of St Kilda ?This collection makes a fine stab at it.Robin Robertson's poems are beautiful in their simplicity, and so evocative....in "Leaving St Kilda" his list of placenames as he circumnavigates the islands becomes a love song.I'd never heard any Alastair Roberts before..took me a couple oflistens to get used to his unusual voice.. but it is just perfect for the songs and his rendition of "Exodus" is sublime.Don't be put off if it's not what you expected at first listening..you'll come to love it..it's a real grower!Love it Love it

Bit disappointing if you wanted genuine St Kilda stuff as most of it is in English and newly written. One standout track which lists the placenames of St Kilda/Hiorta does make it a reasonable buy.
