Description

Armando Iannucci co-writes and directs this feature comedy - a big-screen spin-off of the BBC series 'In the Thick of It' - satirising the inner workings of British and American politics as the powers-that-be attempt to 'sell' the deeply unpopular Iraq invasion to the public on both sides of the Atlantic. When British Minister of International Development (Tom Hollander) puts his foot in his mouth by announcing on national television that 'war is unforeseeable', the British government is sent into a spiral of chaos and spin propagated by the verbally aggressive Director of Communications, Malcom Tucker (Peter Capaldi). Foster soon finds himself bundled off to Washington on a fact-finding mission - where, in his naivety, he becomes the pawn of the Pentagon's General Miller (James Gandolfini) and Assistant Secretary of Diplomacy (Mimi Kennedy) in their mission to do their not-very-best to stop the war happening.

PERTINENT AND WORRYINGLY REALISTIC!

LIKES:1) Style of Humour2) Characters3) Realism4) Sheds light on real processes5) Realism of the ending.DISLIKES:1) A little too much bad language2) A feeling of anti-climax.My wife and I were in hysterics all the way through. Then the sad reality of US and UK Politics hit us. This film is very close to the truth, if a little hyperbolic. This is what has been going on through countless NATO interventions. There are those whose pay cheques are funded by the arms manufacturers and oil companies, and those, very few honest, principled, but impotent politicians who are seen as a threat. Just look at what is going on at the moment. The film is superb in the pace and its humorous portrayal of serious issues. It demonstrates what has been known for years in a dynamic and captivating portrayal of incompetence, cowardice, back stabbing and bullying. Peter Capaldi plays the Rottweiler, Malcom Tucker, in a role far removed from Doctor Who. There's something funny about Glaswegian swearing that makes it less offensive (my ex-wife was from Glasgow) and I spent a lot of time up there. It's the directness and the colour of the language. Capaldi brow beats, and plain threatens people in to compliance with the party line. There's no real need for that in the US because everyone is owned by a corporation. The plot revolves around a hawkish Secretary of State wanting to go to war in the Middle East.....like every administration since Jimmy Carter. It focuses on a bumbling UK Secretary of State for International Development who's mouth is somewhat quicker than his brain. This gets him involved on the side of the Doves wanting to avert another atrocity/humanitarian disaster.Watch the film and make your own mind up, but I think this is worth 90 minutes of your life, if only to understand the reality of UK and US Government mentalities.

A Word of Mouth Classic

The Thick of It is gaining popularity right now partly due to this great film.It is a real sleeper. Ignored at the cinema, this DVD has gained its popularity through Word of Mouth. It really is a very memorable and quoteable film. This more than three episodes stitched together. Its extra dimension comes from its recognisible topic (Its obviously about the Iraq War, but the war is unnamed because we cant assume this debacle will never happen again, so could apply to future events) and from the fact it mines the American Improv scene; using different actors and actresses from the excellant Christopher Guest films. You will enjoy the sparring from the American actors just as much as the sparring you will expect from the actors in The Thick of It.The cover is slightly misleading. Although you DO get the Tony Soprano vs Malcolm Tucker spar that you want to see, but there is so much more than that. Chad isnt even on the cover but he's brilliant. And a special mention to Steve Coogan who is absolutely hilarious in this. At his very best, which you know must be very good. The film is even getting a good rep in the states, who you would feel are more conservative about political satire. I hope we see more Iannucci and just how good a feeling is it that Christopher Guest now has a rival? You should buy rather than rent this, because you wont want to give it back after 3 days.

Biting satire from veteran Iannucci

Version I saw: UK DVD releaseActors: 7/10Plot/script: 8/10Photography/visual style: 6/10Music/score: 5/10Overall: 7/10In the Loop may be Armando Iannucci's first film as a director, but it is built on over 20 years of experience in caustic satire. He began working with the likes of Chris Morris, Charlie Brooker, Steve Coogan and Stewart Lee in the early 90s on TV series The Day Today and Brasseye. More recently, his primary work has been on TV's The Thick Of It. They may deny it, but In the Loop is basically a movie spin-off of this series.Drawn from The Thick Of It are foul-mouthed spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi), one of the more vibrant creations of British television in the last decade, and young speech-writer Toby Wright, played by Chris Addison. They journey to America with new character MP Simon Foster (Tom Hollander), after he accidentally aligns himself with one side in the covert campaigns to initiate a war with a Middle Eastern country. It's a fairly naked parody of the build-up to the 2003 War in Iraq. The underlying theme is about the difference between the confident and the hesitant. While those with the assertiveness and charisma to press forward their plans control major world events, the rest of us are left to fight over the scraps. Many characters in In the Loop have a great line in dry wit, until they are put under pressure or scrutiny, at which point their intelligence hilariously collapses.A great cast of remarkably versatile actors like Hollander, Capaldi and the late lamented James Gandolfini deliver the lines brilliantly, be they sharply witty or bumblingly hilarious. The script rightly won an Oscar nomination for Iannucci, regular The Thick Of It contributors Simon Blackwell and Tony Roche, and co-creator of UK TV's Peep Show, Jesse Armstrong. Some of the events and characters depicted are just possibly a little too close to reality to satisfy me completely of the creativity on show, but that is not the point. The focus is on the small people caught in big events, and the paralysing effect of blind panic on the reserved British psyche. That and Malcolm Tucker's genius for foul language...For my full review, see my independent film blog on Blogspot, Cinema Inferno: http://cinemainferno-blog.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/in-loop-2009.html

Chef d'oeuvre

For political junkies like me

In The Loop is the most blistering portrayal of political machinations I have ever seen put to film. Peter Capaldi plays the British Prime Minister's Chief of Staff, the man who controls the British governmental ecosystem. He is absolutely brilliant as the foul-mouthed Machiavellian puppet master who tells Ministers off, and instills the fear of god in the people who supposedly make decisions. Having spent over 25 years in government myself, I can totally relate to the construct and the whole notion of the dog who barks the loudest wins. The movie shows how egos and perceptions lead to bad decision-making and bad policy-making. In The Loop has a stellar cast of British and American actors, including James Gandolfini, who plays a four-star general who is a dove camouflaged as a gung-ho hawk.Did I mention this is a comedy?

politisch inkorrekt
