My phone fell and the screen cracked. It became unresponsive in the center (probably 80% of the screen). Initially I was going to see if just replacing the glass would work but replacing just the glass is a challenge (which is why shops just buy this and over charge you to replace it!) and when I removed the glass I realized the LCD film was split where it was unresponsive, so a new LCD and digitizer was in order.
