Master class in cables
I am a cable addict and love how twisting and turning stitches creates beautiful cabled patterns. Alice starmore gives you insight to the cable patterns and introduces more to you It’s a good reference book but also has fantastic cable patterns for you to knit

Stunningly beautiful book with excellent pattern tutorials
This is an absolutely stunning book - has a good history of Aran knitting (if you're interested) and the first section illustrates the various cables used in the patterns in great detail. I'm a new knitter, however this seems very straightforward (even I can understand how the cables are formed) - following the actual patterns themselves (mainly jumpers and shawls) there is a section which shows you how to design your own patterns, with measurements for each size. Another reviewer complained that all the pattern use the author's "expensive" wool which is true, however this wool is easily substituted for widely available cheaper yarns (check out yarnsub for suggestions).

Beautiful patterns
This is a beautiful book, filled with patterns that I will use. I have already knitted one of them and I'm delighted at how it turned out. It's all of the unusual details that make these patterns so good. I'd recommend this book.

Belongs on every cable-lover's bookshelf
This book is beautiful! Alice Starmore is a knitting genius who works wonders with cables. Every sweater in this book has made it to my to do list, and each one is indeed a work of art.

A classic for a reason
This is one of *the* books for aran knitting. It's not a dictionary of cable and aran stitches, but Starmore does discuss the nature and construction of them, encouraging you to create your own designs. The front section has a good deal of history of knitting on the aran islands and aran knitting in general. Most of the book is devoted to some stunningly beautiful patterns. Some of the shaping is a little dated given the book's age, but are well worth seeing and, if you want, adapting. All the patterns in the book use Starmore's own yarns, which I believe are now discontinued. The book doesn't list the yarn weights for substituting but an online yarn database like ravelry.com will have that information. Substituting isn't as much of an issue for cables as for her fair isle work where the choices of colour are a key part of the design. All in all, it's a good reference book with lovely patterns (which you may want to adapt for a more contemporary look) and beautiful pictures.

A stunning superb book
I have folders containing many aran knitting patterns. All now destined for the local Hospice shop. This book simply means I dont need any of the ones in my folder any longer. The instructions are easy to follow even for a beginner such as myself. I have completed the pattern on the front of the book in about a fortnight, and it wasnt difficult whatsoever. About to order yarn online for another pattern in it this week. I have found regular DK yarn (knitted a swatch to make sure) in pure Scottish wool was a perfect replacement for the strange yarn suggested in the book. All the patterns in this book are do die for, and all use charts - my preferred choice as it happens. The patterns have a modern twist to them, even my teenager daughters (17 and 19) have earmarked a pattern for me to complete before Christmas this year - Praise indeed!
