Very informative and insightful, yet entertaining. A glossary would be an asset.

The most defining book on Goa for visitors
The author has given such a beautifully nuanced perspective on all that is Goa. Each chapter dedicated to a distinct aspect of the state. It's a real treasure trove of information on the state. Hats off to Katherine, a German woman who is more curious about our culture than we are.

Outdated information
The German author and her Punjabi husband moved to Goa around 20 years ago, and without any children to raise. (It was after Kakar's children by his Indian ex-wife had grown up.) None of the information contained in this book is valid anymore. Everything is more expensive, good schools in Goa are few and almost impossible to get into, native Goans openly harass and even physically attack non-Goans.In addition, the book is badly researched. Kakar claims that Benaulim would be a Hindu village if it wasn't for Portuguese rule. Not true - due to mass immigration from Bijapur, Tiswadi was majority Muslim at the time of the Portuguese conquest in 1510 and Salcette was also moving in the same direction. Hence the Portuguese had the support of local Hindus when they conquered Goa. Considering the Kakar couple's claims of following Sanatana Dharma, their move to a Catholic village looks like hypocrisy. Their subsequent support for mass immigration from other states of India means that the native Goans now want the couple gone from Goa permanently.
