The Outsider Filmmaker: Start Your Film Project Without Funding Paperback – 11 Aug. 2023

I have no intention of making a film [yet. You never know.], but I do follow Anthony Ferraro on Instagram, have been a long-time subscriber to his YouTube channel; Create Sci-Fi, and enjoy watching the short films he produces. Having a small YouTube channel myself, I do like to support other content providers whenever my very limited funds allow. So, when this book was released, I bought it. Now that I've read it, I can split it down into two sections. What it isn't and what it is...This book isn't a long, in-depth, blow-by-blow account into the minutiae of producing a low/no budget film and all that that entails...But, what this book is and what you can get out of it, is so much more. Rather than being bogged down with specifics, this book lays out Anthony's filmmaking philosophy, from initial concept to final release, in manageable, easy to read and understandable chunks. It's also bursting with Anthony's positivity and 'can do/make do' attitude...Read this book even if your not an aspiring filmmaker, as Anthony's ethos can be so easily applied to any dramatic arts production, social media content creation, or [to be honest] any other low/no budget non-film related project that requires the involvement of others.

Great book. I've been following Anthony for 10 years now. His YouTube channel I awesome and he has great merch. Lol.The book is extremely straight forward and I suggest this to anyone who is interested in making any sort of social media channel or movie.

Lots of useful information and little to no fluff. A great resource for low budget filmmakers.

Having gone to a film trade school, I found the information contained in this book to be fairly basic. The basic information is, however, inspiring for any would be film maker. If you read this book, then check out his youtube channel you cannot help but be inspired. The author has certainly made professional looking films, both shorts and feature length and done so on no or very low budget. I was certainly impressed, and you will be to. The author encourages you and inspires you to "STOP TALKING ABOUT IT ... JUST GET OFF YOU BUTT AN DO IT !!!!" ....

I sat down last night to read a chapter or two of Anthony Ferraro's The Outsider Filmmaker. I even had a bookmark handy. Instead, I read right till the end credits. Mr. Ferraro's enthusiasm for his subject is contagious. When in high school I made/showed my own indie shorts. I had friends, a super 8 camera, a tripod, a film splicer and a ptojector. The Outside Filmmaker reminded me of the hard work, diligent planning and sheer joy that made my DIY horror shorts worth doing. My models were the "B" movies I watched over and over again. These films were and remain enjoyable because they emphasize storytelling that keeps you engaged. If you've viewed any of Ferraro's work, or watched his Create Sci-Fi channel, you'll see how this book is a written record of how he has created, planned and executed his vision, all while having fun (and some spaghetti dinners) along the way.Ferraro's book is an excellent roadmap for first time filmmakers and a rallying point for more veteran practitioners. While the cavalry may noy be coming, you can create, plan and adapt your way through any roadblocks that arise along the way. In short, you won't need the cavalry because you have a plan...The momentum Ferraro recommends flows through this wonderful book. The guidance and encouragement, supported by many clear, practical suggestions for success, will inspire anyone who has thought I'd like to but can I? Mr. Ferraro shows how you can: passion, confidence, flexibility and purpose...Bravo Maestro!

This is more than just a textbook or how to manual. This is a philosophy on the production of creating not just films, but anything you need to raise money for. I’ve been following Anthony’s work in films for years. He has a whole channel devoted to making sci-fi, props, costumes, and effects. He’s learning and teaching others as he goes. Anyone learning the basics of producing should definitely pick up a copy.
