Review: A Lovely Book - This is a lovely eBook, with an active table of contents and over 130 Catholic prayers. More importantly, it has the Nihil Obstat and Imprimature...i.e., which are the OFFICIAL, Catholic Church, declarations that a book or pamphlet is free from doctrinal, or moral error. In other words, while anyone can write or compose a book purporting to be a spiritual book, this has also been reviewed by Church authority and has been found to actually be free of doctrinal and moral error. I use this book every day!
The book I have is not the leather bound version that some of the reviewers have talked about but rather the one with the picture of Mary on the cover surrounded by blue. I really like this short book and use it every day. If you are a more traditionally minded Catholic you will probably like/love it. It is published by Tan Books so many of the prayers are very traditional. I like that fact but have to admit that some of the language is very old fashioned and for me, it just doesn't click. There are many older English words such as "Do thou henceforth; Vouchsafe, Doth, Dost, Mayest, etc" that make some of the prayers sound very odd for me. I'm weird I guess because I will use the Older English (thee, thou, thy) with the Our Father and the Hail Mary and even the Hail Holy Queen prayers, probably because I was formed with them and they sound "right" to me. But for some of the other prayers I will change some of the wording around to make it sound more normal to my ears. So instead of saying, for example, "Vouchsafe, O Lord", I will say, "Grant O Lord" or something like that--same meaning, just more normal words that speak to my heart more. Anyway, I hope that helps. I have found prayers in here that have really helped me. I love it!

Absolutely fantastic little prayer book, it’s compiled from vary ancient and basic prayers. Because the prayers are so old they are not focused on things like the pope, so any catholic or Anglo-catholic like me could use it without tension. It’s small but just enough to fit in your hand comfortably. The spine is a little stiff so don’t expect it to lay open. But for its size it’s got a great large print font, not straining on the eyes so regardless of how old you are you could see it extremely well even if you extended out your arm. The paper is thick so it’s extremely durable and the text doesn’t bleed through at all. It’s uncomplicated, ease to navigate, read and use. A solid five stars, highly recommended for anyone wanting to study the most important prayers of the church.

This is a useful selection of prayers and nicely printed. The booklet is compact, 6 x 3.75 inches—slightly taller and narrower than A6 and able to fit in a pocket—yet the print is of a good size. In general, this TAN collection uses what’s sometimes called “traditional language”—plenty of thees and thous and archaic verb forms, Holy Ghost rather than Holy Spirit, and some turns of phrase that are no longer idiomatic. Many will prefer this. And perhaps those who do had better get hold of copies of books like this while they’re still around, because the trend now is to modernise the language much more thoroughly. There’s a little more to be said about the language. Many of these prayers are translations from Latin originals, and as anyone who’s seen a few collections knows, with some prayers almost every book one comes across has a slightly different translation. The Prayer to St Michael is a good example. The version printed here is perhaps more familiar in the US and has somewhat different wording from that usually used in English churches after a TLM Low Mass—“battle” for “day of battle”, “prowl” for “wander through”, etc. So as I say, there are different versions of some of these prayers out there. The versions used by these compilers are generally familiar and for the most part run well. However, if you prefer, for example, “O kind and loving Jesus I kneel here before you …” to “Behold, O kind and most sweet Jesus, before thy face I humbly kneel …” then you may want to look elsewhere. There’s what seems to be an error in the layout on page 9. A short one sentence prayer for the faithful departed is added to the end of Grace After Meals—as is usual—but then the longer prayer for the departed is run on to the end as well, being printed immediately below without its own heading. I didn’t notice any other apparent errors or misprints. In summary, it’s well produced, portable and good value for the price. Certainly recommended.
