This CD collection features the highly acclaimed and pioneering Goth band,1919. The band formed in December 1980 in Bradford and set about recording heavy, melodic, intense dance music with no frills and pretentions and consequently the band were an early contributor to what became the Goth genre. This collection features all the tracks that were recorded by 1919, including their singles ‘Caged’,‘Repulsion’ and ‘Cry Wolf’. The CD also has all the tracks from the band's ultra rare album"Machine" from 1984. The CD booklet includes all the band’s original sleeves, sleeve notes and a complete discography of the band's releases to give a comprehensive view of the band’s history.

What year is it again?
So they sound like a certain band led by a Mr. Coleman-who cares? Live, 1919 were a powerful unit and they managed to nail it on record as well. This contains the Caged 7 inch plus the Machine mini LP and the Cry Wolf EP all of which crackle with energy and intensity and contain what must be some of the most full on tribal drumming of their early 80s era.The other tracks however aren't that great to be honest but the comp. is still worth buying at its cheap price.

Killing Joke

Surprisingly good
I bought 1919 on a whim. Having heard only a brief snippet of the song "Alien" on I was intrigued but unsure what to expect from the album. Well, after hearing for the first time I was pleasantly surprised and the more I listen the more I enjoy it. The music is almost immediately catchy, slightly heavy/yet very danceable and interesting early Gothic post/punk. 1919 displays a pretty clear Killing Joke influence but in my opinion takes the inspiration without sounding derivative. The only weak point I might mention is that the lead vocals aren't particularly striking when compared with more the iconic gothrock howlers like Nick Cave, Ian Ashbury or Peter Murphy, but they are far from poor. The rhythm section is especially tight and capable of pulling off a variety of styles. Songs like "Caged" and "Alien" are high energy rockers while the "Slave" and my personal favorite track "Dream" are very infectious and dancey. Since these guys started recording in 1980, I don't doubt they had some influence in the burgeoning "Goth" scene, but I find it surprising how completely they disappeared until Anagram released this compilation. Good album by a forgotten band.
