For over 2 decades I have played and game mastered dozens of RPGs, and the Dragonbane box is hands down the best "Starter Set" I have seen. The set includes the full rules, a full multi-player campaign, a solo adventure guide, dice, a beautiful map, dozens of high quality card stock miniatures with stands, a battle mat, and high quality treasure, rumor, and initiative cards. Most RPG starter sets give players several sessions of play with the expectation that they will buy more products to have the full RPG experience. With the Dragonbane boxed set, it's a one and done purchase. You have everything you need in this box to play for years. As for the rules and the included adventure campaign, they are equally high-quality. The rules feel like an elegant and refined D&D that lets players jump in to the character creation and playing process without having to constantly crunch numbers and keep track of dozens of abilities. The deep character ability development experience is here, but it feels less restricted and not at all overwhelming. The included campaign, Shadow of the Dragon Emperor, is a solid adventure that is both easy to run and can be utilized as either a sandbox campaign, episodic campaign, or a hybrid of both. This is a phenomenal product. If you are tired of D&D and Pathfinder, you cannot go wrong with Dragonbane.

This is a great fantasy RPG with intuitive mechanics, and just enough crunch to be interesting without overwhelming players (and GMs) with options. Combat is dangerous and rewards intelligent play. It inhabits a nice middle ground between OSR and 5e. The only complaint about this box set is the rather thin selection of monsters. This is remedied by buying the bestiary, and I consider it mandatory rather than optional. All in all, Dragonbane is highly recommended.

This is one of the best boxed sets for any RPG! It comes with a complete set of rules, a full-length campaign, pre-generated characters, dice, maps, and standees for the pre-gens and most of the important non-player characters. It also has great art and high production value. A+!

Dragonbane is a simple yet elegantly designed TTRPG. This box set, which includes a small sandbox, is the best starter adventure product I have have EVER had the pleasure of GMing. My players and I have learned the system as we have played in a seemless and very fun way. Low prep - pretty much reading the adventure materials once, I am an experienced GM, though - and then simply running it at the table. There are many opportunities to improvise with the materials and for player choice, especially if you are coming from an Old School Renaissance perspective. Most excellent!

This game was Sweden's most popular roleplaying game back in the 1980s, and now its back .I had owned the PDFs of this game for quite awhile now, and finally decided to get the physical product. The rules set is easy to learn and actually fun to play. and the the amount of parts you get and the quality of the parts is amazing compared to what most other game creators give you for your money. I started playing role playing games in 1979 with the Holmes basic edition of D&D, So i have played alot of different game systems since then. I can easily recomend this game. I also own several othe games from Free League, all of them are great games to play. Enjoy!

It is an amazing starter set and full rules. Standees are excellent for those starting without minus and solo rules to get a feel for running. Very concise and easiest rule set for anyone starting rpg with little experience. I have been gaming for 50 years, and love this set.

This core set is a complete RPG experience in a single box. It includes the full rules, adventures, solo mode, dice, standees, cards, and even a gorgeous map, no extra books or add-ons needed to start playing.

Really glad I picked this up on a whim. I'm a big fan of several Free League systems, and their books are always gorgeous to look through, so I decided to check this one out. Dragonbane is a very interesting world, and the art is absolutely top notch. The box contains all the bits and bobs you'll need to run a game, which is vanishingly rare in today's ttrpg market. The one thing I was disappointed by was that unlike the Forbidden Lands box, this one contains a softcover (kind of no-cover, actually) rulebook inside the box, rather than a collector's edition hardback rulebook (I would have still been happy with the regular edition hardcover, but the look and feel of those Forbidden Lands books that came inside the box made me a lifelong Free League fan). I could see liking this one for passing around at the table, so maybe it'll end up being a plus for some -- but for me, the absence of a nice, solid copy of that core book for reading and prepping the game soured the experience somewhat. Still, it's only an aesthetic concern. The product in its entirety is still wonderful, and a fantastic value for the asking price.

Wer auf der Suche nach einem neuen TTRPG sein sollte, oder auch einfach mal ein Rollenspiel ausprobieren möchte, bei dem man sich nicht erst durch eine ganze Bibliothek an Hintergrundwissen durcharbeiten muss um das Setting auch nur ansatzweise zu begreifen, dem sei Dragonbane wärmstens empfohlen. Basierend auf dem schwedischen Rollenspielklassiker "Drakar och Demoner" aus den frühen 80ern wurde mit Dragonbane eine aktualisierte Version für ein internationales Publikum kreiert, das zudem aufgrund der einfach zu begreifenden Regeln sehr Einsteigerfreundlich ist. Als bestes Beispiel diesbezüglich kann das Kampfsystem herangezogen werden, welches extrem geradlinig ist und keine komplizierten Rechenoperationen erforderlich macht. Im Resultat sind Kämpfe schnell, brutal und fördern taktisches Denken und Zusammenarbeit der Spieler. Was diese "Starter-Box" angeht, so mag diese Bezeichnung irreführend sein, denn anders als man es vielleicht erwarten würde erhält man mit dem Erwerb dieses Produkt prinzipiell ein Komplettpaket: In der stabilen und schön gestalteten Box findet sich anstelle von gekürzten Quickstart-Regeln das Komplette Grundregelwerk als Softcover mit 113 Seiten, eine komplette Kampagne bestehend aus elf einzelnen Abenteuern (ebenfalls in einem separaten Softcover mit 117 Seiten), eine dazu passende große und wunderschön illustrierte Karte des "Misty Vale", dem Schauplatz besagter Kampagne, mehrere Blanko-Charakterbögen sowie auch fünf vorgefertigte Charakterbögen, eine 12-seitiges Solo-Kampagne ("Alone in Deepfall Breach") als Booklet für Solospieler, eine zweiseitige "Battlemap" (425x275mm, mit einem 1-Zoll-Gitternetz) aus dickem Papier für Innen- und Außenbereiche, zwei dicke Pappbögen, aus denen Standees für die gängigsten Gegner sowie Spielercharaktere herausgedrückt werden können (und die dafür erforderlichen Standfüsse aus klarem Plastik), sowie ein komplettes Würfelset, bestehend aus 4W6, 1W4, 1W8, 1W10, 1W12, sowie 2W20 (letztere jeweils mit einem systemspezifischen Drachensymbol für die 1 und einem Dämonensymbol für die 20). Das wundervolle Artwork von Johan Egerkrans möchte ich an dieser Stelle übrigens auch noch mal ganz besonders hervorheben. Einfach phantastisch und wunderschön, da kommen viele nostalgische Gefühle wieder auf... Auf den Punkt gebracht: Anhand dieser ausufernden Aufzählung sollte an dieser Stelle jedem klar geworden sein, was für einen Kracher Free League hier rausgehauen haben, insbesondere zu einem derart attraktiven Preis. Ich kann hier nur respektvoll meinen Hut ziehen und eine wärmste Empfehlung aussprechen.

As a first-time RPG player, I couldn’t be happier that Dragonbane was my introduction. The game arrived with everything I needed, and while it took me a bit to set up my character, I found the rules surprisingly accessible compared to other systems. The gameplay is so rewarding—every session is filled with fun, and I love the sense of humor woven into the world. The items included are all good quality, the rule & game books softcover but full color and nice paper. The standees really bring the characters to life, and the detailed map is a standout feature. The dice are beautiful, and i love the custom numbers 1 and 20 for Dragon and Demon rolls! My only minor critique is that the solo campaign didn’t quite suit my style—but I was able to adapt its rules to the main campaign, which is fantastic and im enjoying exploring the world so much, i look forward to playing each session. I really appreciate that Free League gave solo players a chance to get into the game, and I hope they create even more solo adventures in the future. Overall, Dragonbane is a delightful, immersive, and approachable fantasy RPG that I can’t recommend highly enough!
