Angels Flight (The Trials of Kit Shannon #2)

Read this on the recommendation of my wife who after reading the first book asked me to purchase the other 5.I have to say it was a really good read so much so that I also read all 6 in the series one after another. My wife liked the first one the most but I found all 6 equally enjoyable.

She takes a couple pages from the book of mentor Earl Rogers, shaking up courtroom protocol and challenging those in the courtroom to see her clients as human beings for the first time. Her faith remains realistic, but unshakable, right up to her closing argument in the case of Juan Chavez vs. the state of California. She carries the story and does it beautifully.That's not to say secondary characters get the shaft. Plenty of them get the chance to shine, from Corazon to Ted Fox to a typewriter expert named Ernie who works at the Los Angeles Examiner. In fact, Ernie's key scene in Angels' Flight is one of my favorites, a great example of unexpected expert testimony. I also enjoyed Corazon's key scenes, especially when she muses on the relationship between Protestants and Catholics in her city. I would have liked a little more of that, especially since so many of Angels' Flight's characters are immigrants.Tracie and James pull off some believable but surprising plot twists, both during the main court case and toward the end of the story. They give Kit a wrenching "black moment," challenging her to grow professionally and spiritually. Some confrontations and revelations are breath-stealing; for example, the authors once fall back on the old adage, "If the story needs a boost, have a guy walk in with a gun." That doesn't work all the time, but it worked great in this book.Some things worked less well. I needed to know a little more about Ted Fox; he seems like an okay guy, but kind of flat. I also wanted to see more of Juan's personality and motives. It seemed not only unfair, but unrealistic, that Kit would wonder if Juan were guilty essentially because of one display of temper. She's smarter than that. I appreciated Kit's moral dilemma, but it could've been written better. That said, the pieces of what really happened fit together perfectly once you see the solution.No lawyer wins every case, but Kit Shannon wins another point in Angels' Flight. I'm looking forward to walking into the courtroom with her again--and cheering as she triumphs.

I’m really enjoying this series by James Scott Bell and Tracie Peterson. It has been an exciting and interesting ride with the heroine, attorney Kit Shannon. Set in LA in 1904, it is chock full of history and intrigue. The characters are well-developed and Kit is a delight. There is a lot of courtroom action that has kept me on the edge of my seat. I love learning how different things were back then and I love the insight into human character that hasn’t changed at all since that time. Kit imparts a lot of spiritual wisdom. I’ve read the first three books so far and each one has been well worth reading and very exciting..

I'm a very picky fiction reader and it takes a lot for me to invest myself (literally and figuratively) into a new novel. Having just completed Angels Flight, the 2nd in the Trials of Kit Shannon series, I was just as eager to read this one as the first in the series.Hands down, the most powerful factor in my continuing to read this series is the unmistakable fingerprint of James Scott Bell in the writing. The sense of place he creates, his passion for LA, comes shining through his work. Sure, I like strong characterization and a great plot (which this book definitely has) but above all, a passion for place is what I'm looking for in what I read.And I'm reading this series at an appropriate time in my life. While I'm not a woman in a male dominated profession, one thing that is still the same as the situations in these books is that power corrupts easily, and the needs of the individual are frequently stomped down in favor of business and industry and wealth. Being terribly disheartened about he cold-hearted approach of the industry I work in, I hope perhaps that reading about Kit Shannon at work will inspire me to keep fighting against the establishment. Because someone has to care.I've already downloaded book 3 of the series and am reading away....

This is a compelling read and full of the truth of life even in the 21st century. We as Americans still deal with prejudice and violence and hatred of others who “don’t look like me”. God is long suffering to us all and hopefully he will continue to show mercy on the human race.

Very nicely done. The courtroom drama is excellent and the characters come alive to an unusual extent for a potboiler, though the repetitive emphasis on Kit's Christian fundamentalism becomes a bit tedious. Both authors have a good grasp of the English language, though neither seems to know the difference between "pour" (Cause a liquid to flow from a container) and "pore" (Direct one's attention on something). Thus we have Kit "pouring" over her research materials. It's one of remarkably few errors of that sort for a Kindle book, so this criticism probably is a nitpick, though it'll knock you back when you come to it. All in all, a creditable job of plotting and writing.

I love this book and this series. Growing up in Los Angeles, I love the many landmark references. The courtroom scenes are dramatic and believable, given the era. I love the author’s presentation of TRUTH as outlined in the Bible and Blackstone’s Commentary. His search for justice for the outcasts of society is commendable. I highly recommend this book and will be reading the entire series.

These authors have a way of capturing you in their web, with their descriptive characters and fast-paced writing. I was up until 1 a.m. on more than one night to find out what happened next! Fun stories.

I have read the first two books in this series. It is hard to put them down. I don't know how much is historical fiction but I don't doubt that this could have happened! Love these books!

Another great adventure in Kit's Trials. I sure was fooled how this book ended. Her faith in God and knowledge of the bible plus some gut instincts had this turned around.

I'm now addicted to this book series. Please keep writing more. Eventually, have intuitively superior super attorney Kit Shannon transported through time to today to interview Donald Trump, mediate the GOP presidential debate, and then be appointed as a Supreme Court Justice. Then turn that into a movie! This series is so fascinating because of it being believably situated in Los Angeles around 1900 turn of the century, yet depicting the social tensions, religious divisions and male-female psychological complexities that we deal with today. This is an easy and enjoyable read that will also makes you think deeply about life and today's issues while enjoying a fast paced terrific story. Well done! ~ Keith in Los Angeles

Like the 1st book in this series, you are taken through twists and turns you don't see coming. Yet the heroine keeps relying on God.

Another great story in the series! The authors bring to life how life for a young woman striving to enter the legal profession was at a time when only men were lawyers during the early 1900s. The story is expertly written with lots of surprising twists and turns while also effectively weaving Kit's Christian faith throughout the story. I'd highly recommend it!
