Only lasted 3 years
Bought one of these for our home security system. Started having issues with the drive not being recognised a few days before going on holiday a couple of weeks ago so did not have time to investigate further until today. I did find reformatting the drive helped for a few days before getting the same issue. It appears the drive has 'bad blocks' on it (whatever that means - I'm no HD expert) so assume that is why it was causing the recordings to fail which in turn lead to the whole system not responding until being rebooted. There is no support from Amazon now and they refer me to the manufactures website. They say I am out of warranty by 2 days so cannot even raise a support ticket! Until recently I was happy with the drive as it seemed to be working with no issues 24/7. However, having spent over £200 on this drive 3 years ago (they are much cheaper now for the same capacity) I would have expected the drive to have lasted longer. It did not out live the 3 years warranty but unfortunately I just didn't get the chance to report it in time. As they say you learn by experience. If I do purchase another one I will make a note in my diary to check the hard drive for errors especially well before the end of the 3 years warranty.

Only time will tell (updates as we go along)
My existing CCTV HDD has recently begun to mess about. It was a WD Green, which is not recommended for 24/7 usage. Now I fully understand about Purples, I bought and installed this 1TB device. The packaging was adequate, though I felt there could have been more soft stuff supporting the HDD inside its box. It was sealed in its antistatic bag along with a small pack of silica gel. The date of manufacture was Dec 2020. On connection the smart data showed zero hours 'on time', so a truly NEW item. As time moves along I shall add to this report if anything happens. I shall also report if nothing happens.*******EDIT*****24th May 2021 - absolutely nothing to report. All systems are working fine and after 3 months on an 8 camera system 69% of the disk is still free.

Runs Noisy & Hot
I finally needed a replacement of one of my WD RED for my Synology NAS that sits next to my desktop. What a mistake to choose this purple drive. The drive is very loud and noisy. Also, it runs from 7 to 10 degrees hotter than my other WD HDD. I am concerned with the temperature rising to fail levels, and it is not even summer. If you want this drive on a NAS or use it in an NVR near you, you will get annoyed with the noise. I will transfer it to my NVR and buy WD REDs (mine lasted about 10 years with a few bad sectors).

Beware - Chinese grey import
I bought this to replace a 3 year old WD Purple HDD in my Ubiquiti CCTV system. When it arrived I noticed that on the label it said "For sale in China only. No warranty support outside of China". When I queried this with Amazon the support staff said don't worry we guarantee it for 2 years, but, as I pointed out, the Pro version is supposed to have a 5 yr manufacturer's warranty. Warranty period proved irrelevant however as the HDD refused to load or format in multiple machines. Initiated the return process which is easy enough but Amazon received the faulty disk over a week ago and yet no refund received, with the status still showing as "Your refund will be processed when we receive your item.". Poor product and unusually poor service from Amazon

Outstanding Surveillance Hard Drives
I purchased two of these WD Purple Surveillance Hard Drive for use with my Hikvision DVR. These drives are optimised for surveillance systems and work extremely well. The DVR is in my office and the drives are fast, noiseless and been operating for over 3 years without any problems. I have been completely delighted with these drives and I would be happy to recommend these WD Purple Surveillance Hard Drive for any surveillance storage solution.

Update: Failed after 6 months
Fitted perfectly in my CCTV unit as an upgrade, formatted easily and can barely hear it while it's working! Also comes with hdd screws.Edit: After 6 months of use in system the hard drive failed. It doesn't power up in either the CCTV system or in an external HDD enclosure. I would have expected it to be more robust and durable given that it is specifically marketed and designed for a CCTV system and 24/7 use. Thankfully Amazon have agreed to send a replacement one.

Failed after just 10 months of use!
I fitted this to my CCTV system thinking it was going to give me long service life? It lasted 10 months!! I need to get around to returning this for a replacement?

Good good
Came brand new and officially licensed genuine product fully boxed and can't ask for more than that as these drives last a lifetime.
