Trust Me: Discovering Trust in a Culture of Distrust

The Anatomy of Trust
I love the writing of my friend Joseph Myers. His first two books “The Search to Belong” and “Organic Community” have been life shaping for me, and so I was expecting a lot from his newest offering, “Trust Me: Discovering Trust in a Culture of Distrust”, and I was not disappointed. In the midst of a trust crises, Myers gives us a whole new way to think about how the most precious commodity within relationships and organizational culture works. Trust is the most fundamental building block, and Myers helps us to understand through neuroscience that Trust and Distrust are not on opposites sides of a continuum, but operate in distinct regions of the brain. Distrust is processed in the amygdala, while trust is processed in the prefrontal cortex, thus we need understand the different ways these parts of the brain operate. We need to develop the ability to help the amygdala part of our brain to become a guard dog, and at the same time to work through the prefrontal cortex to develop the relational capital of trust. Some of his best work in this book is the practical help he gives in building a cultural of trust in the final chapter, so be sure to read until the end.
