Q: are the shelves adjustable

Hi, Rael, The shelves are not adjustable. There're 13.78 inches space between each shelf. Suitable for most home decorations and books.

Q: does the shelves have a wood texture to them? or is it just a wallpaper with wood patterns?

It is a "wallpaper" wrapping with wood patterns, but it also has a tactile wood texture to it. The shelves underneath the wrapping are particleboard, but VERY solid and sturdy — far more sturdy and heavy than other particleboard shelving I've purchased in the past. The wrapping itself is a high-quality print. You need to look closely to tell it's printed and not real, aged wood.

Q: I have a tremendous amount of books. Will the shelving hold books on every level?

Yes, you can store a large number of books on each shelf. The support bar underneath each shelf allows it to support more weight than you can probably put on it with just books. As long as your books aren't very tall (aren't greater than about 12 inches), then you will be able to pack them from one side of the shelf to the other without weight issue. Two of the shelves on my unit are supporting over 70 lbs of books, and it's handling it without problem. I do suggest investing in some book ends for each shelf, since there is no side-panelling.

Q: Does the 5-tier bookshelf need mounted to the wall for safety or can it stand well on its own?

Affixing it to the wall with the supplied butterfly screws will, of course, make the unit more sturdy. However, I have been using it in my apartment for almost a year without affixing it to the wall, and it's been extremely sturdy on my hardwood floor while supporting at least a few hundred pounds of books. If you plan to use the bookshelf on carpet, then I would recommend affixing it to the wall. If you're using it on a hard floor (wood, linoleum, tile, etc.), then you don't need to worry about sturdiness.
