A Chess Instructor's Dream
Excellent!!!! This book helped me through teaching a two week course on chess for summer school. The kids were in grades 2-4. This serves as a help for the question, "What do I teach next?" and as a guide for curriculum. Nice nice nice! Definitely worth the purchase to improve your game. I learned a few things and I've been playing chess for 5 years. Excellent!

Clear and Concise Chess Teaching
Mr. Bardwick has the rare gift of truly understanding the mind of a chess beginner,so he can instruct the teacher in buildinga solid foundation of the basics of chess. Within this frameworkthe student can then apply future learning and knowledge for his own benefit. This is the best, surest, and quickest way for a student to advance his chess ability.Lessons 5 and 7 are particularly helpful. This is a superb manual then for the intergration of chess into the lessons of math and life.

A helpful book for your classroom
I found Todd Bardwick's book to be an good resource for providing valuable ideas for teaching chess in the classroom. It provides a modest amount of material for practical instructional use (with more material it would have been a 5 star book) but what makes this book special are the useful ideas to "reach the kids" and the use of chess on an academic level. If you are a classroom teacher or if you teach chess at the elementary school level you will find this book very useful. I would recommend that this book not be just a "stand alone" text but add a book like ...if teaching older students. This way you will have all the material you need!

Rather Broken Up Approach
I didn't like the progression of how this book came together. It has a rather confusing approach simply because it tries to mix teaching the basics of chess (rules and strategy) along with trying to insert it into a classroom and trying to make it entertaining for kids. It simply fails in the approach to trying to put it all together. Some useful info [] - some not so colorful (black and white) pictures in the book - why would a teacher want this? - it isn't written for kids for sure. Some of the printing quality was lacking. But this book could have been done up a lot better and perhaps the "detective press" ...

The best guide to teaching chess to kids!
I used this book to teach chess to several classrooms of kids. The book makes chess easier for kids to understand the game and helped me explain the more difficult concepts to them. Now all the kids are addicted to chess!

A GREAT TEXT FOR THE CLASSROOM TEACHER
I can recommend "Teaching Chess in the 21st Century" along with ... for the classroom teacher who wants all of the material they need for a weekly chess program for an entire year."Teaching Chess in the 21st Century" is well focused on what the classroom teacher (or even a professional elementary school chess teacher) should have to give them proper direction. I have taught chess to children ages 5 to 12 for many years now, not only in the US but previously in Europe, where I was ranked as a first class player (about 1900 USCF).The author obviously knows how to maintain the interest of beginning level elementary school students, which is obviously his specialty! This book is a MUST if you teach chess to kids.

Some Good Points Covered - But Lacking in Many Others
I found this book to be a major disapointment. Math in the classroom is certainly one aspect of chess that this book covers. What about how chess works on reading skills through pattern recognition? How about actually covering in detail the actual lesson plans that a teacher should use over an entire program? And, finally how do you make it fun for the kids in the classroom (boring and dry doesn't do it!).[...]
