Q: Is there any background hum when running this sub or is it silent?

Had no background hum with this sub. It does take time to set it up properly with your amp. I had to go into the amp settings to get it right and make sure I had it set up correctly. Once set up it has been great. I have a Yamaha 675 av amp. Hope this helps.

No, it doesn't have any controls you use. You turn it on, you set the crossover frequency and calibration volume the first time you set it up. It's got an auto-switch off as that's the only thing you'd want to control. It's your amplifier that has the remote control.

Use a double or single, as long as they are RCA you'll be fine, but you can only use one. Not sure what you are using it for so not sure what you want as a result (subwoofer I get, but not sure what system you have 'feeding' said subwoofer).
