A great introduction to soil science
I love plants but don't have green fingers so I wanted a book to help me in this department. I got more than I bargained for in this book and though I haven't completed it as yet, I have read enough to know that it is a wonderfully instructive book. I feel it is a masterclass not only in soil but in ecology as a whole. If you have any interest in plants, soil or anything botanical, this is a great place to start.

Wonderfully practical and useful
This book covers almost everything you need to know about soil. It also has some really useful information and practical tips including no till. I loved the tip on DIY soil test - I thought I had sandy soil but its loamy and I even tried the pH test with red cabbage! Great fun. The DIY methods even included bacterial testing and the more usual (and good) composting guide. It was also great to read about the history of soil and why its so important to look after it. Really enjoyed this book - incredibly useful and practical.

What a great starting point
This is a book I would not normally buy and read but each month I purchase a random book of which I do not know very much about and trying to broaden my horizons. Goodness there was a lot in here for a beginner like me to take on board, none the less totally Soil Science fascinating. I mean assessing your own soil, who does that? but I totally see where she is coming from. Reading about the importance of soil and the history to it, she does a great job of. So much information. Thoroughly enjoyed it at it was well written.

Excellent introduction to soil science
This easy-to-read book gives an excellent overview of soil science and how you can apply it to your own garden or farm. She goes over how to assess your own soil (without buying a kit!), soil composition from the chemical to the itty bitty crawlies and microscopic, variety of plants and their composition, ways to compost at home with instructions for your own setup. I've already recommended this book to my family who are avid gardeners. In addition, understanding soil science is something we all need in order to help turn around the impact of our lifestyle on the planet to implement the knowledge or encourage others to.
