10 Things Every Writer Needs to Know: Literature, Inquiry, and Social Responsibility

I don't often enjoy reading how-to texts for teaching, but I loved this book! Jeff Anderson shows his passion for his subject time and time again. This book is chock full of real, usable activities for teachers and students. Each of the "ten things" is explained in a way that both teachers and students can understand and feel excited about. Anderson's book is full of charts, graphs, indexes, and real-life examples of how these activities worked with his students. I also loved the quotes from writers that peppered the margins of every age. As a student of teaching writing, these inspired me. This book got me excited to go back to classroom and teach writing to my students. It also inspired me to improve my own writing. I know I said 'excited' a lot in this review, but that what this book did for me. I'm inspired to write and to inspire my students in turn. I highly recommend this book for teachers of writing.

In 10 Things Every Writer Needs to Know, Jeff Anderson has again provided us with knowledge which is immediately useful and applicable. This book allows us to walk into the classroom on Monday morning and get writing. Although the title says, "10", there is an abundance of useful information. Jeff's simple style makes it easy for even the most challenged of writing teachers, to comprehend how to teach each skill. Mr. Anderson provides us with models which speak volumes. In addition, Jeff's whit and enthusiasm are contagious. They make us want to be better at our craft. Thanks Jeff, for again providing me with the tools I need to work with both teachers and students alike.

I don't think I have ever read a textbook as interesting as this one. It is written clearly so that anyone can understand it, and there is really no useless "fluff". Everything ties together. Students who wrote little or nothing prior to my using ideas from this text are now enjoying responding to various prompts suggested by the author. There are numerous strategies here that are very helpful for struggling learners.

I go back to this book often for ideas. Easy read. And awesome ideas to implement and improve writing instruction.

This book is easy to read, well organised and packed full of great teaching and learning ideas. Power writing has really had a huge impact on both the quantity and quality of my students' writing, and has developed their vocabulary in a meaningful way. Highly recommended to all teachers of writing.

This book is FANTASTIC! It has given me some fresh new ideas to use in the upcoming school year with my kids! Although it may be geared for older students (grades 6+) I feel I will be able to adapt for my 4th graders. I am recommending it to my fellow writing teachers!
