Too short
For any young man to read this is a must. Although middle class and high education the story levels at the ordinary relationships of two younger guys. I would have liked the coming out periods in more details. This could only soften what can be a worrying and deviating experience for a guy.Antony McD is a thoughtful and sypathetic illustrator of what is, maybe and could have been in such relationships. An education in a book for parents as well as people of all orientations.

Charming, candid love story.
Anthony McDonald is a brilliant writer of the modern coming-out story in which the relationship between men in love with each other is at the heart of the drama, rather than a battle to come to terms with themselves and a homophobic society. The heroes of this story are two new Oxford undergraduates and it tells of attraction, passion and love. All three emotions are portrayed vividly, frankly and both credibly and movingly. If I have one reservation it is that Pip and Cocker, portrayed through Pip's first person narrative, come alive as lovers but are, Cocker especially, less accessible as individuals. Cocker, unlike Pip, has no history of being attracted to other boys but the complexity of character that is hinted at early on is left tantalisingly undeveloped. But it is a charming, sexy and heart-warming story.

Light-hearted and positive read
Good for those contemplating a university career and worried about sexuality. Idealised and forgiving - easier than the real world truly is - but the clue is in the title - "romance." A positive read for those wanting escapism.
