Three times funnier than regular comedy, that's for sure
"The Naked Gun Trilogy" may or may not be "three times deadlier than regular comedy," as this DVD's front cover copy proclaims. What's certain is that the three films contained within-"The Naked Gun: From The Files of Police Squad," "The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear," and "The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult"-are funnier than regular comedy. That's because the filmmakers are willing to do anything for a laugh-including slapstick, satire, scatological humor, and puns. And if one joke fails to work, which is rare, the next one will be on screen momentarily. There's little point in attempting to summarize plots, which exist merely as excuses on which the filmmakers-including David Zucker of "Airplane!" fame-hang all those jokes. The common thread connecting them all is the romance between Lt. Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) and Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley). As that plays out, Drebin finds himself going undercover as an umpire at Dodger Stadium to thwart an assassination attempt on Queen Elizabeth; stop a plot to sabotage national ecology policy; and go undercover once again as Phil Donahue to stop a terrorist from blowing up the Academy Awards. This last gives us one of the truly great lines of film dialogue: "Phil Donahue is puking in the trombone." And as if that weren't enough, we also get to see real celebrities such as Pia Zadora, Mary Lou Retton and James Earl Jones playing themselves while Drebin-as-Donahue turns the award ceremony into a disaster.Nielsen, Presley and George Kennedy-as Drebin's superior, Capt. Ed Hocken-are the glue holding these films together. None of them ever suggests they know all this funny stuff's going on around them. They play every pun, every one-liner, every slapstick routine and sight gag as seriously as if they were appearing in an actual 1960s TV police drama-appropriate, given that the films are adapted from the short-lived "Police Squad!" TV series of the early 1980s, which parodied 1960s police dramas. Like Don Adams, Barbara Feldon and Edward Platt in these films' cousin, the original "Get Smart" TV series, they're the center around which the madness revolves-a madness which extends even into the films' closing credits, so don't walk away from the screen once they start rolling."The Naked Gun Trilogy" is goofy and lots of fun.

Just as hilarious as I remember
Hadn't seen these since I was a kid. They don't make movies like this anymore, just pointless laughs and fun. I think you could watch these 20 times and still see something in the background of a scene to laugh at that you had never seen before. Great movies, if you like films like Airplane! you'll love these.
