Machete, Carbon Steel, Polypropylene Handle

This review will be quick. In short you can not go wrong with this machete for the money. It does not come razor sharp but mine had a really good working edge. It was fairly easy to put a razor sharp edge on it. However the tip of the machete was difficult to put a sharp edge on it. This machete does not have the build quality of a higher end machete but with a little work it can be a gem. Also it does not come with a sheath. I bought the sheath for the 18 inch Cold Steel Latin Machete which works well for this machete. The reason I gave it 5 stars is simply because it is well worth every penny I spend on it. One final note, yes, it does machete task quite well.

I love this machete. I bought it in 22" as well and prefer the 18" length blade. These are legendary tools that get the job done. I've been trimming a monster hedge and vine that ruined the roof on a shed that was built too close to my property line way before my time. This machete cuts through thin or thick vegetation and never complains, nor has it broken like other machetes costing over double the price of the Tramontina. I put hockey grip tape on my handles for extra grip and comfort.

Previously, I have only tried out the wooden-handles Tramontina machetes. They are made with exceptionally good steel. They take a better edge than I've been able to get on other machetes, and they hold it better. The Tramontina steel is markedly better than that used in the Cold Steel machetes, or even US-made Ontario machetes. The biggest problem with the wood-handled machetes is the handle. The plastic-handled one I tried is much the same. The handles is slippery, and yet also abrades the hand when in use. I don't know hoe they managed that. With the wooden-handled model, a little sanding makes the handle much more comfortable to use. I would think that a little hockey tape or something similar would really help the plastic-handled machete. The handle shape is a little uncomfortable in use. It digs into my hand when I am chopping vines and such. It needs a little padding. The plastic handle does at least have a lanyard hole, which is a useful feature, and is not found on the wooden-handled version. If I needed a lanyard hole, I'd consider this machete, but otherwise I'd go with the wooden handle. It is more comfortable to use and easier to hold onto. The blade appears to be slightly superior on this model than on the wooden-handled model. It has a real ricasso, rather than just a section at the bottom that looks like somebody forgot to sharpen it. That is more attractive, and also lets you see, at a glance, where the cutting edge starts. You'll use that part of the edge down near the handle for more delicate cutting tasks, like maybe peeling fruit. The machete is a camping and survival tool, and it must be useful for many different kinds of jobs. As on the wooden-handled machete, this one arrived without a good edge on it. It could have been used to clear brush, but it cuts much better with a sharper edge. A few minutes with a file put a good working edge on it. As with other Tramontinas, the construction is a little sloppy and the edge was uneven. After filing, I found that there was a short section in the middle of the blade that was just as dull as before. It took several more minutes to even out the edge and get it sharp all the way down. The machete cut well and held its edge. No surprise there, as Tramontina makes about the best machete blades you'll find, without spending hundreds on a custom machete. For temperate zones, I have found the Cold Steel Magnum Kukri machete will outperform any other I've tried, including the Tramontinas. The Tramontina steel is superior, but the blade shape of the magnum Kukri performs beautifully. If you are sold on a latin-style machete, then Tramontina is the best, but for cutting the denser plants we have in the US, the latin-style blade shape is inefficient. If Tramontina would start offering a kukri-style blade in the US, it would probably be the best factory-produced machete available in the history of the world.

Probably about 1000 hours+ of use so far. Best working machete ever, disposable (less than $20) but keeps an edge all day. Perfect weight for most vegetation that grows in temperate/wet climates. All my coworkers try to 'borrow' it. I've given some as gifts, maybe that's a bit odd... These come factory semi-sharpened (it needs work but not a completely blunt edge), I don't know of any machete manufacturer that sells a factory sharp machete. Put some time in with a good file and a stone to hone the edge. Do not ever take this machete to a grinder (unless you're a pro). A file will keep the blade sharper for longer and not temper the steel. I carry this and a corona saw with me and I can lay waste to the understory Pacific NW forests, when not using a chainsaw of course.

Excellent quality machetes! These are what the actual jungle natives use in Central America. For those that are not well versed in machetes yet, be aware that almost all machetes come DULL from the factory. This is on purpose to allow the user to dictate what kind of an edge he/she wants on their machetes depending on what they intend to cut with it. These Tramontina machetes are no exception. Expect to spend some time tuning this machete up to how you like it. Also, for some strange reason, Tramontina is NOTORIOUS for leaving about a 2"-3" section at the very tip of the blade, COMPLETELY UNSHARPENED. That means that this portion of the blade is left at pretty much full blade stock thickness, and will therefore require a rough stone, and some time to grind to a proper bevel. Just something else to consider. I would not recommend using powered bench grinders due to the fact that they grind metal at such a rapid rate, they they can super-heat the blade very fast and pull the temper from the steel, thereby ruining your machete. Once this machete is fully sharpened, watch out! It cuts like a beast! I'm sure anyone would enjoy it!

I use the machete to cut small branches and brush. I used it for a short time so I can't comment on longevity and such, but it looks like a very good quality tool. The only gripe is the handle which is a bit skinny for my hand and if you wear gloves it may not be such a big problem, but without gloves hitting something serious is felt in your hand. My old Ontario machete has a considerably thicker handle, which fits much better in my hand.

I've used this model for well over a year in surveying work, and it still cuts wonderfully. In a typical day, I could end up cutting anything from vines and swamp grass to small trees, and this machete can cut them all almost effortlessly as long as the blade remains sharpened. I can't remember how sharp the blade was on arrival, but in my experience all machetes need to sharpened before extensive use. The handle has a great feel to it and can stand up to all-day use. The only complaint I have concerns the handle, which has recently become a little loose. In that regard, however, I may be mostly to blame as I have resorted to using the handle as a makeshift hammer for placing remote points. Even so, a little electrical tape can fix such issues. I recommend this machete to anyone who needs a versatile and reliable cutting tool that will be used extensively.

Seems well made for the price. This is a real working tool, not a novelty item, so don't expect it to be pretty or fancy. Blade came sharp enough to use, but not sharpened. All machetes need frequent sharpening. You can get similar quality in the Caribbean for about $5

Amazing steel! I bought an $18 Gerber "Gator" machete a few years back and the blade chipped in three spots on the first three cuts! And that's on less than half inch branches! Total garbage! But this thing? I went to TOWN on some branches that were probably better-suited to a buck saw or an axe and you can't even tell where they hit the blade. Rock solid. This steel does not give one sh*t, it just blows right through it. All I did was give it a quick low angle "axe" sharpening and it was ready for whatever — but I'll probably be adding a safety lanyard and some handle wrap for a bit more grip. Stop messing around with fake "prop" machetes and get some real, Venezuelan Tramontina steel. Added bonus: it absolutely sings when it cuts stuff. That "ting!" sound never gets old. Best $30 you can spend for yard work or bushcraft or hunting/camping. Super impressed.

Machete ist sehr scharf und robust. Tramontina ist hier für die hohe Qualität bekannt. Diese Macheten sind zur Spitze hin nicht geschärft, das ist ein Arbeitsschliff und kein Fehler. Es verhindert das Verletzen des Benutzers falls man mal abrutschen sollte. Klare Empfehlung.

Mit dieser Machete kann man problemlos fast alles an Planzen eliminieren. Bin froh, auf weiteres Gartenwerkzeug verzichten zu können.
