Ultraman, Vol. 1: Volume 1

I just finished the original Ultraman TV Series and wanted to check out this Manga before watching the Netflix Anime adaptation which covers volumes 1-8. This is a great sequel to the original series but you don't have to have seen the Original TV Show although it does help for returning characters and franchise mythology the book explains enough to get you started. This first volume is fast paced and doesn't mess about. It gave me vibes of Guyver and Iron Man too. I enjoyed it, onto volume 2.

Mecha is one of my favourite genres, but I don't seem to read it very much. Not sure if Ultraman is relly mecha as we have some aliens involved rather than robots, but they *look* like robots. This was a quick rush of a read for me. Tons of action, with some great art but still plenty of story and character to get us interested and get the plot started. Quite impressive for a first volume where action/plot often overrides character. Shinjiro starts out as a toddler then we skip ahead to the present where he is a young man. The ending is quite a shocker and left me feeling a bit creepy. Most certainly will be reading volume 2!

Very happy with item

I've been aware of Ultraman for a while but never seen any of its various incarnations. It's a Power Ranger type of affair, where a man grows to giant size to fight monsters. This story takes place a number of years on and had an Ultraman who doesn't remember who he is and his son discovering their powers. It feels like a modern super hero story in this and towards the end of this volume starts to bring in an air of mystery that might build into something interesting. I'm not a huge fan of the art. There's nothing wrong with it as such, but it is a bit bland. The storyline and characters are a bit bland too. I'm not sure if I'll give another volume a go.

This was a Christmas present to my brother who watched the original Japanese series on Radio-Canada when he was young. It's not the exact Ultraman of the '60s. It's still a fun read.

This manga has an interesting unique twist added to the typical "Kaiju/human vs. Robots" feeling, but rather has a being instead combing with it's human host to save Earth from evil, it gives certain Megaman vibes to it too. The pages are of good quality and the illustrations are well-done. The colored pages are also beautiful, and the details for the Ultraman suit on each page are beautifully done; and inked awesomely too. The action sequences are in order too, and I'd recommend anyone who likes Pacific Rim (2012) read this manga. It certainly kicks ass, and in between I wanted to rank it as I like/love it.

Growing up, I watched Ultraman films on VHS. My aunt even made me an Ultraman costume one year at Halloween because Ultraman wasn't popular enough in the states to find a costume. That being said, since those days, Ultraman has seen some changes and iterations that many young and old fans of Ultraman from the past may not have enjoyed. This is not one of those iterations. This Ultraman story picks up from the original story and develops in a way that it has been some long time since we've seen Ultraman and now he's needed again. Also worth noting, this is categorized as manga and the book reads that way, but even includes a short tutorial on how to read it (if you open the book up from the wrong side... but if you read it correctly, you won't see the tutorial until the end). Must-have for all Ultraman fans and a very easy to read and comprehend book for first-time manga readers.
