Do NOT watch unless you understand REAL life...not meant for those who like "Glossy" films
A wonderful film about friendship and life. It has some wonderful life lessons in it. I read one review on here saying it was depressing and not good for her "girls "...I guess if you like Hollywood glossy films this isn't good. It has an actual story and you HAVE to listen and follow. It is hysterical if you get the humor, but also depressing in parts because it is about LIFE, real life, not hollywood glossy 90210 crap.I watch this every few years just to smile and be grateful for how far Ive come as a woman. Also great SOUNDTRACK, but again, I think most of the reviews on here only know ABBA's one song, so they might not appreciate the music either.

Confidence and self-respect
Excellent movie/plot especially with Toni Collete in the starring role! The plot centers around Muriel who is striving for respect and recognition from her peers and especially her family. Her father is a dolt that embarrasses his family every chance he gets by telling their shortcomings to business and political people. For me, I would have walked out on him, I would not have stayed and listened to all that. Muriel strives to receive that recognition and respect from her peers, but like her father, they put her down at every moment and treat her disrespectfully. She still goes on and on her holiday trip, finally meets up with a true friend who really tries to understand what she thinks and feels. Muriel herself does grow up finally and becomes the responsible person she really is, and you can see she finally does respect herself enough to get away from her abusive father (emotional abuse), and live her life by herself with her roommate. A coming of age plot for emotionally abused persons that shows that you can pull yourself out of that situation and give yourself the confidence and self-respect that you deserve.

It's an amazing adventure of a young woman finding herself in life, love, an friendship.
This has to be my all-time favorite movie. Muriel is an overweight, unemployed young woman who still lives at home in "Porpoise Spit" Australia. She wants so much to belong to a group and is constantly berated by a group of snobby girls. Her father does nothing but blow his own horn about how he is the greatest thing in politics and schemes to get everything he can by abusing his job in public service. Her mother is a beaten down doormat who is trapped in a loveless marriage.Muriel decides to steal money from her father and go on the vacation of a lifetime. It's a timeless commentary on what it's like to find one's own way in life. The movie will bring laughter, tears, and love for this young woman who comes of age and into her own. It's sure to be a classic for many years to come.

Reviewing the Reviews...
Dear People from the Future: Don't watch this movie. Don't review this movie. It's a world you never knew. An English speaking country which speaks a dialect you might not be able to understand with -- get this! -- different slang and everything! Back in these days no one had an iPhone or anything like that. People had to go rent videos at the video store and watch them at home! OMG! Sometimes the videos were on TAPE. This is a coming-of-age film from a different age. Why don't you just wait until it's remade in some strangely sanitized retro version in 10 years? As for the movie, I liked it the first time I saw it, rented from Blockbuster, sometime in the early 2000s... Entertaining approach to some hard ethical questions.

you won't be disappointed. If you enjoyed any of the previously mentioned ...
One of the triumvirate of stellar Australian comedies which includes Strictly Ballroom and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This is the movie that brought Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths to international prominence. Both Collette and Griffiths would go on to be nominated for Academy Awards for later film roles in The Sixth Sense and Hilary and Jackie, respectively. It's a charmingly quirky comedy about a young woman growing into her own skin and taking responsibility for her choices in life set to the music of ABBA. It contains a fair amount of drama dealing with the complexities of Life that real humans experience,so if you're looking for mindless drivel you won't find it here. It's perfectly cast as well without one false note to be found. If you're a fan of quirky comedies then do yourself a favor and watch this, you won't be disappointed. If you enjoyed any of the previously mentioned movies, make sure you watch the English film Beautiful Thing which strongly features the music of Mama Cass Elliot.

Fabulous feel good film
Maybe I'm a bit biased as I have fond memories of Australia and I love Abba, but after not seeing this film for years I have years in my eyes and I laughed frequently throughout.Truly a great film. Maybe a bit Marmite as the characters are caricatures and the story unrealistic. However it is about a woman's fantasy and rising above the horrid people we all come across in life.It is the sort of film where you cheer the underdog and a get glimpse of what it could be like to give your enemies the finger.Easily five stars and then some, I really can't recommend it enough. If you like escapism, fun and a sense of life with added comedy, this is the film for you!

This film is undeniably loveable.
A perfect chick flick, full of comedy, teenage angst, sorrow and joy. This feel good film will get you loving the character Muriel as she takes you through the ups and downs of her life striving to be 'somebody' but finally comes her acceptance of who she really is and be happy with herself. Plus all the abba vibe throughout adds to its ability to get you to watch it time and time again. Note despite its title, its not about weddings - its about a former geek becoming a woman before your eyes. Do not be put off by its title - its not a love story, its a story of self discovery

Classic film
I first saw this film in the mid 90s when it first came out. Something reminded me of it recently so I thought I'd get it and watch it again. I wasn't disappointed. Toni Collette is excellent as the quirky Muriel who goes from being gawky, shy and awkward to a woman who can stand on her own two feet.

Muriel's Wedding
Dubbed, "The Abba Movie" with it's memorable sound track, this Australian cult-classic movie has wide appeal. The central character, Muriel, downtrodden and bullied by her overbearing father and shallow, bitchy circle of so-called friends, she dreams of being married, and escaping small-town life. Muriel heads for Sydney, where she reinvents herself as "Mariel", and, via a newspaper advert, achieves her dream of getting married, however, this tale of triumph over adversity is not straight forward as Muriel discovers new friendship, and experiences a tragedy, and finally realises that being true to oneself is the only way to finally win.
