The Shortlist: A Scottish Murder Mystery (DCI Lomond Crime Thrillers Book 2)

Outstanding story
I consume 2-3 books of detective/crime/thriller per month, and I must say this is one of the best I've read for some time. Really innovative story, set in a well-described atmospheric Glasgow/Scotland, and with a story that - although you picked up pieces as you went - didn't give everything away. It's a very "meta" story, being a crime novel about crime novelists. But it's not cheesy or egotistical, and the pseudonyms for obvious other crime authors raises a wry smile. Great book in a great series!

The Shortlist -
This is the second book in the Lomond series. The first book was a really great story and I was looking forward to reading this one. Lomond is a good character and his side kicks Donna and Ross add to the storyline. Was this book as good as the first? No - I don’t think so. It was a good read, but the storyline was one which has probably been used before - however there was a twist. I will still read book 3, which I have already downloaded. It’s a 4.5 out of 5 from me.

A true mystery that almost beggars belief
Great writing with strong characters and surroundings. Their back stories and day to day lives are engaging and the promise of a future lurks under the surface for the lead detective. Only issue I have is with the suicide t frame a murderer - it’s just that little bit too much, too clever a twist, and not too credible

love the character
I’m a big fan of everything Andrew Raymond has written – compelling plot lines, intriguing and contemporary stories… But the DCI Lomond books are at another level because of DCI Lomond. There is a depth and richness to his story and portrayal, as well as the other characters and locations, that make these even better than his other series.

Acceptable but flawed
The first of the DCI Lomond series (The Bonnie Dead) had a much more balanced approach to plot and character, than this, the second book. The very literary set up of The Shortlist tends to over-dominate, and make the story improbable and far-fetched, although it is a credit to the author that the book is still eminently readable, hence still four stars. The quality of the proof-reading on the book was also poor, with numerous errors and repetitions, as well as confusion on the timeline of events, it was quite hard to be clear about times of day when the two separate character groups (the team at the castle vs. the investigating team) were operating their sections of the plot. A bit of editing would help to address the awkwardness this causes. I will read the next instalment of the series with interest to see if the third book returns to the promise of the first.

Andrew Raymond
First read by this author. Thoroughly enjoyed the first book in DCI Lomond series. The description of the team makes them feel familiar and I can picture the scene. Can't wait for book 2.

The Shortlist.
A good read but the plot was too convaluted. There were too many characters and it was hard to keep with who was who and what it was all about. I had read the third book first so I will need to wait for the next one to come out to find out what comes next. I am glad I found you and will read what comes next.

Great author from my hometown in Scotland
I have become a big fan of Andrew Raymond books since my sister gifted me the Bonnie Dead and I read the entire book on my way back from Scotland. These books are page turners and the plots hold you to the end. I especially love that Andrew Raymond is from my hometown and I am familiar with the places and streets mentioned in his books. I’m ready to order the 3rd in DCI Lomond series.

If you like the UK whodunit...
Andrew Raymond's 'The Short List" was a good read. His first DCI J Lomond book "The Bonnie Dead" was also a good read. So I was delighted to learn that a third DCI Lomond was set to be released this year. Can't wait. This author had me on the hook for the almost the whole book. He can tell a story, this second book he fleshed out his main characters, the secondary ones don't count because no matter what, one or more are going to die and the others are either a murderer(s) or red herrings. I enjoyed this book and look forward to more DCI Lomond books.

slushy long
Took Too long to develop the ending. A lot of unnecessary back and forth. Forced personal background into the ending.
