Q: What length of pipe is needed for an effective coil to go around?

You need 4 inches of straight pipe ideally before the stop cock but it can go after the stop cock and it doesn't matter if the pipe is vertical, horizontal or diagonal. 4 inches is the amount you need for 11 turns of the coil with space either side. Kind regards, Annie (Scalewatcher)

Q: How do you knw if stopped working?

Well the normal life span is up to 20 years depending on what type of water you have , very hard water will reduce this by a couple of years. So to your question, if your appliances and taps will show signs of limescale. If this happens it is time to replace the unit , we live in a hard water area and got 18 years out of our ScaleWatcher . Q: How many years before this needs replacing - and how do you know when it is failing?

I have had this for over a year now and to be honest I have not really seen a difference in the amount of lime scale I see deposited on my taps shower screen etc. so I think the answer to your question from my point of view is that you wouldn't notice if it is running or not.
