Criminally Underrated (Spoilers Ahead)
I am just going to be very blunt and admit that CUBE is quite possibly one of THE MOST criminally underrated independent films to have ever come out of Canada in a very long time. It was made on a budget of $350,000 CAD, but director Vincenzo Natali and his cast and crew have somehow managed to make up for their miniscule budget by using the good old Smoke & Mirrors trickery that would make John Carpenter proud, by only building one Cube room and reusing it with different color palette walls, and using camera trickery to make us believe as if they had built more than one Cube room.I remember catching this movie on TV when it first premiered on the Syfy channel (when it used to be called SciFi at the time) back in 1999 when I was just 6 years old, and since then I have grown to progressively fall in love with it, what I love most about this movie is how it never provides answers as to the mysterious nature of the Cube itself, it remains concerned to the characters' attempts to survive its death traps and hopefully escape from it, but it turns out that they are more of a threat to themselves than the death traps ever could be, as human nature threatens to tear them apart. The cast, comprised of six people, give what I believe are fantastic performances, most especially Maurice Dean Wint as Quentin, who deserves a lot more recognition.I HIGHLY recommend Cube, it is an independently budgeted film that deserves a lot of love and recognition from Movie Buffs like me. It is definitely worth the watch.

Wild
This is a different mysterious kind of movie. Nicole de Boer is great actress that hasn't been given the credit she deserves. Cube is a creepy cool movie that I had to have.

A cult-classic fave.
The Cube came out when I was in high school. I've always loved horror movies and while this not your typical horror movie, it has the fantastic feel of one.Imagining waking up in a square room with a door embedded in each wall of that square room and each opens up to the same 'room' you are in but you have no clue why you are there or what these rooms are about. No food, or water. THEN, you come across others, who are just as lost and confused and terrified as you but each has a background in their lives that could help you survive. But what does it mean? The Cube is an exercise in suspense to perfection. The opening scene is a perfect setup. Think of humans being put in this maze and being studied in how they react or solve problems or work with others. YOU ARE THE RAT. It's a twisted social experiment that can end in a torturous death if you choose the wrong cube. How would you deal? Who is behind it? The government? Aliens? Nothing at all? WHAT? You just don't...know...not even at the end. Which I loved. This low-budget film is great in its intelligent plot from beginning to end, which is psychological and sadistic and oh-so beautiful. But the quality of the writing (and yes, just cuz there isn't a lot of dialogue the dialogue is solid and used to great effect) and the acting (and yes again, most of these actors you've never seen or heard of) makes it all the more powerful in its execution. The direction, photography, the music, it all works so brilliantly.I did not find this movie slow at all. The close-up of the actor' faces, their superb acting and the claustrophobic feel only enhances the beauty of this movie. Nothing is done without a purpose, every character has a role and every action has an immediate reaction. Every clue leads you to the next and this movie becomes a big puzzle piece for the new to figure out and understand. And as each character is taken out, the big mystery is who actually survives and if they do...what's next.Give this amazing movie a chance. It has held up even till now. This was made in 1997 but it could easily appear to have been recently made. Those Canadians, they may have the rep of being nice but they made a wicked cool horror movie. And I have watched this movie a few dozen times and I still love it every time cuz you still don't really know what it's all about even as the clues are there. This is not just for horror fans but anyone that wants to watch a great movie. Definite keeper on my DVD shelf.

Low-budget instant classic
Before you pass a harsh judgement on this movie, you must consider two critical elements: the budget, and the general time frame of its initial release.Unlike most low-budget offerings that try to overcome a weak plot with terrible acting, this is one of those rare gems that has a decidedly obscure plot (aside from the general "escape from the traps", which is something the very popular "Saw" series capitalized on years later). One could say the acting was well-below-average, but you have to look at two key factors there, as well: first, the limited running time, and secondly, the passage of time itself in the story. We're seeing a condensed version of events, not the full ordeal the characters are going through, so things escalate quickly, i.e., people are at each others' throats, lashing out at one another more for their roles in society than their role in the current situation: The cop suspects everybody, the Doctor (more of the "accessible healthcare for all" variety than the "for-profit healthcare system" variety) has inherent issues with anyone involved in "the system", the self-deprecating engineer who does it for the money (and let's remember that this was the 90s, where the whole "no will to live" shtick was pop culture - TV series "Dead Like Me", the "New Goth" scene was being embraced by middle class suburbiana with spoiled rich kids carving Apple logos into their shoulders to protest their parents' capitalism from their iMac webcams, Grunge was top of the pops and dealt more with "why bother?" than "a brighter tomorrow", etc), the not-yet-cliche` "autistic" character (popularized by the movie 'Rainman', where the character in question was good with numbers, although not all Autistics are numbers-oriented), and the "nerdy girl" character (which actually wasn't yet at its height of popularity at that time). As well, you have to understand the significance of the "red room" and the hostilities played out in that particular room; it's a Scientific fact that people placed in a red room will become openly hostile. The cliche` of "seeing red" equating to being angry is based entirely in Science. At the time this movie was made, this was a relatively new "discovery" that was officially recognized by the Scientific Community, even though the practice of painting the home team's locker room red and the visiting team's locker room a soft blue had been statistically proven to result in a home-team advantage and more wins than losses since the 1960s at least. You do also have to overlook the errors regarding math, but there's no such thing as a movie that gets "everything" right, even though you'd assume that a plot which was so heavily hinged on such things would be researched more thoroughly. Again, it's a low-budget psychological thriller, not a training seminar on tangiential space calculations.Lastly, it's Canadian, which isn't to say it's a bad thing, but it would have been considerably different (for better or worse) as a Hollywood product.Overall, this is an important early movie in the "survival horror" genre that flourished in the 2000s, and you have to view it with the correct mindset to fully enjoy it.
