Puppetry 101: Creating Film and Television Style Puppetry

For anyone who wants to know how they perform puppets for television, this book cuts right to the meat. The author lays things out logically and succinctly without obscuring details in a bunch of superfluous jargon.Good information. Enjoyable read.

Adam Kreutinger's book is surprisingly brief, but manages to pack a lot of information it. Puppetry is not as easy as it looks, but Adam does an excellent job at explaining it to a very simplistic level that anyone can understand, and even going so far as to add tips giving character to your puppets. The consistent use of illustrations throughout help with conveying his point. If you have any questions about dolly wiggling, this is definitely a useful too to have under your belt.

This book offers amazing tips on how to hone in on your puppeteering skills and is written so that any age and experience level can gain knowledge without it being too much for kids or too watered down for adults. Adam has such a bright creative spirit that anyone who reads this book or watches his instructional videos on YouTube is bound to be astounded at his skill but more so at his kindness and compassion for said skill and teaching others. As I venture into expanding my own video series featuring my cats as puppets this book has monumentally helped in the creative process and making sure each character is distinct and their own. I had started my series before reading this book and took a big hiatus for personal reasons, but with this book coming out in that time I have been able to analyze some of the things that went wrong and followed Adam’s instructions here and his YouTube videos to not only improve upon my skills but my attitude for a lot of it, especially the mistakes.I truly can not recommend this book enough but also make sure to follow Puppet Nerd on social media and check out his instructional build videos, his puppet patterns and other merch. You really couldn’t get better instructions while giving support to such a good person than this.

I absolutely adored Adam Kreutinger's Puppet Building 101 video series with his free pattern on Youtube and his Puppet Nerd website. With each one I make I'm learning what works best for me and enjoying the journey, making my family a group of foam puppets with arm rods. Getting this book was a no brainer, I had to grab it to move forward with the puppetry fun! This illustrations are simple and drawn in a bold style I really love. Definitely pick this book up if you've made puppets or are thinking, "Hey if I made myself a puppet, how would I use it to make videos for fun or maybe I can create a youtube channel for some videos?" then go for it! This book has quickly become a valuable resource for my family, as we're composing our own puppet stories. I'm so glad that Adam goes into creating compelling characters, writing segments and how to film them, to get the results you're looking for. It's easily become my favorite book to use in planning some videos with my family and the cool puppets I've been making. Thank you Adam, for taking us all one step further and beyond, with where to go, with our hand-crafted puppets, it's been a fun journey so far! Eager to see where we end up taking it from here!

I teach a class on speech perception and social meaning that delves into how we use aspects of physical culture and media to create and perceive identity. Part of this course involves having students design and build a puppet character so they can think deeply about the interconnectedness of body, style, voice, and language use and really get their hands dirty in the process. This book has been a gift from the universe! Suddenly the knowledge I had to spend years gleaning from muppet documentaries, youtube videos, web sites, and just time in front of the sewing machine is available for new puppet builders to read and absorb from an engagine, thoughtfully organized, informative little book. I'm so thrilled! Heartily recommend.

It is rare to find a book that is useful to both the beginner and the professional.Mr. Kreutinger has succeeded in creating such a book.From idea to show, he explains everything from writing the script to how to take that and perform on camera.The camera work is well written and is useful to those starting out and a refresher course for those who have been doing this for a while.His ‘how to write a script’ gives one for everything from puppet plays to screenplays to an outline of a book.I would highly recommend this book if you want to learn how to make puppets come alive and then share that with the world

I've had the pleasure of following Adam's work from his early YouTube days. He has always been an incredible teacher in demystifying the alluring art of puppetry and 'Puppetry 101' continues his trademark approach to "playing like a pro." Filled with puppet history lessons, new techniques, illustrated diagrams, and homework exercises, this book is exactly the text I wish I had when first getting started as a puppeteer — could not recommend more fervently.

The media could not be loaded.  I only wished for more! The layout was well designed and kept me intrigued and my students. I feel this is a great tool for classrooms, learning some puppet history and techniques and well it’s a good read. This book would be a great gift for any puppet fan or creative person of any age. I have multiple copies and plan to donate one to the local library! Thanks Adam for putting all down in this great book!

A helpful, well written and encouraging book on puppetry.

Brilliantly written, fun and easy to read with a ton of information, inspiration and help. Definitely a must for anyone interested in puppetry and puppets.

excellent book, clear, concise... and above all : very inspiring!A very good complement to Adam's Website (where you will find nice patterns for free) which provides very good advice for your productions and which makes you want to get into puppetry (or get back to it!).
