Great, except the price
The price for this is a bit high, but otherwise it is an excellent light and a lot better than having to replace bulbs every year.

First LED light purchase
Excellent indoor light that runs much cooler than comparable MH/HPS setups. During winter this can be challenging depending on where you live, but I'm sure it's nice during the summer. Will update with further use.

Super sturdy design using steel that is probably 50% heavier ...
This is a really well crafted piece of hardware. Super sturdy design using steel that is probably 50% heavier gauge than is really necessary. This kind of construction is hard to find these days! I'm using this for starting my vegetable garden seedlings (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant etc). I use "deeproot seed starting trays" which have an acrylic dome that is 4-5 inches above the soil level at the top. I put this unit directly on top of the dome to heat the soil surface, along with a heating mat, and it got the soil up to at least 90 degrees I'd say. Germination was quick! I now have the tray open and have the light suspended about 14" above the soil level (you can still feel the IR heat with your hand but it's nothing a plant won't like, it's like the sun). It is bright! The coverage is going well beyond the small tray 15"x9" at this height, but any closer and honestly I think it would be too much light for seedlings. I look out the window and compare it to the blue sky sunlight and it's almost that bright it seems. My tomatoes are setting out their first true leaves and they are expanding quickly.. you can already see the second set starting and the seedling is no longer growing upward, nice and stalky! I can't wait to see what a few more weeks brings. I have this on a digital power strip/timer and it is working flawlessly. This is definitely brighter than my old setup of (3) 4' 2 bulb T-8 fixtures, and I'm confident the plants will much prefer this light quality/spectrum, however the coverage area isn't as long. No biggie. This is the same unit that is sold as a "180W output" elsewhere for less $$ as far as I can tell...I will keep this review updated!5 weeks later.. Zero issues. Light works great on my digital powerstrip timer. With the light positioned ~15 inches above my two 9x15 seed starter trays the light output is possibly too much for my tomato, peppers and eggplant seedlings starting off. A lot of purple leaf action at first but now things seem to be going great. The purple leaves (usually P deficiency I've read) may be more of a low temperature issue and nutrient availability due to that than the lights fault. From reading it seems like a minor issue that corrects quickly once you get the plants into the ground. I raised the unit a couple inches and things are looking great. Much faster growth than last year, tomatoes are low and bushy with intense internodal growth. I totally changed up my starter tray/watering system which could be a factor in the growth rate but the bushyness is intrinsically due to the light. I've been running the lights 15 hours a day. I could probably cut that back to 14. Before I pot up the plants I'll cut the light for a while and let the tomatoes stretch so I can pot them a bit deeper. The last picture is 1 month after sowing the seeds and 16 days after the first picture showing the first true leaves.

THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED LEDs IN GENERAL & DIRT GENIUS IN PARTICULAR
IT TOOK COUNTLESS HOURS ON THE INTERNET TO FIND AN ECONOMICAL LED GROW LIGHT I COULD FEEL GOOD ABOUT, BUT I FINALLY DID WITH THE DIRT GENIUS MODELS. FEW EXPERIENCED GROWERS UNDERSTAND THE TECHNOLOGY YET. REVIEWS ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN, BUT THE MOST IMPRESSIVE REVIEW I FOUND WAS ON AMAZON FOR THE "NEW Dirt Genius 280W High Output HO LED Grow Light Panel 3w Vegetation Veg/Clone" (I BOUGHT A LOWER WATTAGE ONE). AMAZON MAY HAVE MORE THAN ONE LISTING FOR THIS MODEL, BUT THIS ONE WILL SHOW NEAR THE TOP OF THE LISTING 8 OR MORE REVIEWS. THE ONE I FOUND MOST INTERESTING SAID IT HAD BEEN USED FOR A FULL HARVEST CYCLE WITH HIGHER YIELDS THAN CFLs. I BELIEVE IT WAS BEING USED ON A SHORT-DAY CROP, BUT IT MADE NO MENTION OF USING A DIRT GENIUS FLOWERING LED LIGHT LATER IN THE GROWTH CYCLE. IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE YOU SHOULD FIND OUT. I TOOK THE TIME TO LOOK AT EVERY DIRT GENIUS ON AMAZON FOR REVIEWS. JUST SEARCH "DIRT GENIUS LED GROW LIGHTS" AND CLICK ON THEM ONE BY ONE LOOKING FOR YELLOW STARS NEAR THE TOP OF THE LISTING TO SEE IF IT HAS BEEN REVIEWED. EVERY REVIEW I FOUND ON AMAZON HAS HAD 5 STARS EXCEPT ONE 4 STAR REVIEWER WHO WANTED A BIGGER COVERAGE AREA. IT SHOULD GO WITHOUT SAYING THAT PURCHASING ADDITIONAL UNITS AND/OR HIGHER WATTAGE UNITS WITH THE LIGHTS RAISED HIGHER IS THE ANSWER FOR THAT. I FOUND A FEW OTHER REVIEWS ON DIFFERENT SITES, INCLUDING A COUPLE BY THE AMAZON "sold by" VENDOR. ALL NON-AMAZON REVIEWS WERE 5 STARS. LIKE MOST OF THE OTHER REVIEWERS, I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SEE THE RESULTS OF USING THIS LIGHT YET, BUT DID RIG UP A SATISFACTORY HANGER SO I COULD SEE THE BRIGHTNESS, AND WOW! VERY IMPRESSIVE! NOW, I BOUGHT THIS LIGHT FOR A FRIEND IN NORTHERN MICHIGAN WITH JUST A 4 SQUARE FOOT GROW AREA, BUT IF YOURS IS BIGGER, THEN SPEND A LITTLE MORE FOR MORE A DIRT GENIUS WITH MORE WATTAGE. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHERS AVAILABLE ON AMAZON. I AGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEWERS WHO HAVE PRAISED THE QUALITY AND STURDINESS OF THE METAL HOUSING. I APPRECIATE THE SIGNIFICANT PERCENTAGE IN ELEVATED LUMENS AND ELEVATED (LUX) BRIGHTNESS OVER OTHER LEADING SYSTEMS. WHETHER THIS IS DUE TO THE 3 WATT DIODES OR SUPERIOR QUALITY DIODES, I CAN'T SAY. WHAT I DO KNOW IS THAT 3 WATT DIODES ARE SUPERIOR TO 1 OR 2 WATT DIODES, AS COULD BE PREDICTED, AND THAT THEY PERFORM BETTER IN GROW LIGHTS THAN HIGHER WATTAGE DIODES. THAT ONE SURPRISED ME. THE 3 YR MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY IS A BIG PLUS, AS IS THE CALIFORNIA DESIGN AND ENGINEERING, WHICH PROVIDES A CLEAR PROTECTIVE COVER OVER THE LEDs TO PROTECT THEM FROM BREAKAGE. ONE PUZZLE ABOUT THESE LIGHTS I HAVE FINALLY SOLVED IS WHY A 180W LISTING MAY TAKE YOU TO A 200W UNIT. APPARENTLY ALL LED's WATTAGE LISTED DIFFERS A LITTLE FROM THE ACTUAL ENERGY TRANSFER; IN THIS CASE 80-90% ENERGY TRANSFER (AS LISTED ON THE "sold by" VENDORS SITE UNDER THE FEATURES TAB), AND 180W/90%=200W. SOMEONE MIGHT CORRECT ME ON THIS, BUT I THINK I HAVE IT RIGHT. MY ONLY PROBLEM WITH THESE LEDs WAS IN SEARCHING FOR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR THEM ONLINE. IF I HADN'T FOUND THE 80-90% LIGHT TRANSFER SPEC, WHICH MADE THE VENDOR SEEM HONEST, I KNOW I WOULDN'T HAVE FELT GOOD ABOUT BUYING, BECAUSE SO MANY VENDORS MISREPRESENT THEIR LEDs BY LEAVING OUT THE DETAILS THEY DON'T WANT BUYERS TO KNOW. I NEVER DID FIND THE ACTUAL VOLTS OR AMPS UNTIL I LOOKED AT THE USER GUIDE AFTER RECEIVING THE LIGHTS. IT IS 1.1 AMPS FOR THE 180/200W LIGHT KIT. PLUGGING THE 1.1 AMPS AND THE 200 WATTS INTO A VOLTS/AMPS/WATTS CALCULATOR/CONVERTER, I FOUND THE VOLTS TO BE 182, ROUNDED TO THE NEAREST ONE (IF YOU KNOW 2 OF THEM, YOU CAN FIND THE THIRD). AGAIN, SOMEONE MORE TECH SAVVY MAY MAY BURN ME ON THAT, TOO. THE REASON I'VE GIVEN THE FIGURES IN THE TWO PRECEDING PARAGRAPHS IS SOME ADVICE I READ RATHER MANY HOURS INTO MY LED SEARCH, BUT BEFORE I HAD ANY NAME BRAND IN MIND, THAT SAID TO AVOID ANY LEDs THAT DIDN'T GIVE THE ACTUAL WATTAGE AND THE PART OF THE LIGHT SPECTRUM IT COVERS. I ALSO READ A LITTLE ABOUT AMPS.I THINK I COVERED ACTUAL WATTAGE AND AMPS, BUT NOT LIGHT SPECTRUM. THIS VEG/CLONE LIGHT HAS BRIGHT RED, DEEP RED, ULTRAVIOLET, INFRARED, COLD WHITE,AND FULL SPECTRUM LIGHTS, ANYWAY, FINDING THE DIRT GENIUS WITH ITS AMAZING PRICE FOR THE WATTAGE, AMAZING REVIEWS, AND THE 80-90% ENERGY TRANSFER WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE ME TRUST THAT THEY WERE MY BEST BET, AND TO DO A LITTLE MORE RESEARCH. THESE LIGHTS ARE LIKE WORKS OF ART, AND ALL THE GOOD REVIEWS ARE SOMETHING YOU CAN'T FIND WITH THOSE UFOs, WHICH OFTEN DON'T INDICATE A NAME BRAND; AT LEAST NOT ONE YOU CAN ACTUALLY GOOGLE.SO FIGURE OUT WHICH WATTAGE IS RIGHT FOR YOU (WHEN IN DOUBT, MORE IS ALWAYS BETTER), AND RUN, DON'T WALK TO YOUR COMPUTER TO BUY YOURSELF A SET OR TWO OF THESE DIRT GENIUS LIGHTS FROM AMAZON. YOU KNOW YOU WANT THEM AND YOU KNOW YOU CAN TRUST AMAZON FOR FAIR PRICING. AND GUYS, BE SURE TO READ THE SHORT USER GUIDE. .
