If you take off the guards and reassemble them on the back side of the motor housing the grinding wheels will be turning up in relation to the tool rests. I needed to do this a few years ago for a sharpening job where I needed to see the color of the steel cause overheating the edges would've ruined the tool. The only downside was I had to reach over the grinder to turn it off but I eventually wired in a foot switch.
