Q: Is Chinese fir a hardwood?

No it is not. I was extremely disappointed with these chairs. One spindle broke as it was being constructed. The wood is very light soft wood ! Sorry hope this is helpful

Yes. However it would be better to have it treated with a wood preservative and or painted. The more coats the better, so it’ll last longer. All wood & any wood left untreated and bare to the elements will eventually deteriorate rapidly. So apply some TLC, ASAP. Best design ever chairs invented for relaxing!

Q: I would want to paint them, would you be able to offer them without oil?

I don’t think oiling the timber it is made from is worth it. I would apply a coat of preservative, one that is compatible with adding 2-3 coats of external quality timber paint after. Don’t leave it out all winter either, if you want it to last at least 5 yrs or more.

Q: Does the back recline with these chairs?

No, but the sitting position is sort of semi-reclined. Its a bit hard to describe. You are upright enough to eat, read or drink but because of the shape of the chair it feels as though you are leaning back. If you are wanting to sleep in it, or tan your tummy then its not for you. We've all found that it is so comfortable, you don't really need a cushion.
