Good quality, good value for money - a little fiddly to fit.
This lantern is a decent compromise between the cheap and nasty polycarbonate lanterns and the much more expensive premium models costing five or more times the price.I purchased this to replace an old PIR light installed by the previous householders over 15 years ago after it finally failed. Time will tell whether this will last as long! This lantern is designed such that the three-core cable from the light switch enters directly behind the centre of the back plate. Fitting the lantern is not as painful as I thought it would be. The steps I took were as follows (fitting to a brick wall):1. Isolate the lighting circuit you are connecting in to at the consumer unit.2. Unwire the lantern from the wiring block, leaving the PIR sensor wires connected. Fit the top and bottom ornaments to the lantern body and lid (the top one is already fitted but upside down for shipping, the other is in a small bag loose in the box).3. Knock out the mounting holes on the back plate with a screwdriver and cut a slit in the rubber grommet using a craft knife.4. Pass the cable through the grommet until the back plate is flush with the wall. Orient the back plate and drill a couple of small pilot holes through the mounting holes.5. Remove the back plate, drill out and fit rawl plugs (not supplied) - I used 4-6mm (brown) plugs with a 7mm bit.6. Relocate the back plate and secure with two screws ensuring the back plate is straight (there are a few degrees of wiggle room).7. Wire the earth, neutral and live into the wiring block.8. I then wrapped the main lantern body in several layers of bubble wrap to protect against scratches during the next step (you could remove the glass panels too but they might be fiddly to put back in in situ, so I didn't bother). I then tied the lantern body to the ladder I was using so that it could hang freely close to the backplate - alternatively, have a second person handy to hold it as you will surely need two hands free for the next step!9. Connect the earth and live from the lantern to the wiring block. Leaving the neutral to last makes it easier because it is the most fiddly as the terminal is shared with the neutral going to the PIR.10. Route the wires around the mounting hole tunnels as neatly as possible and secure the wiring block into the plastic retainer at the top of the back plate.11. After checking that the rubber seal around the back plate is properly fitted, carefully push the lantern body home making sure no wires are pinched.12. Using the washers and nuts provided, secure the lantern body to the back plate being careful not to over-tighten.13. Remove the bubble wrap and untie from the ladder, then fit the bulb (not supplied!) and lantern top using the supplied washers and bolts.14. Have a cup of tea.As noted above, the lantern does not ship with a bulb. It takes an edison screw (E27) bulb. An LED bulb works OK, but be careful to choose one where sufficient light is directed downwards - many have the LED electronics inside a white plastic part taking up much of the lower half of the bulb which can result in a shadow being cast downwards. The lantern has two adjustment screw controls, one on either side of the PIR sensor. One control adjusts the length of time the light stays on for after being activated and the other controls the day/night light level threshold. When set to its maximum, this control will mean the light will activate even in very bright daylight - this is useful for testing after fitting! Once confirmed everything is working, adjust the control so that the light is *just* no longer activated by motion. Then, wait for dusk and check whether the light is working - if not, another adjustment of the day/night control will be needed.Adjust the time control as appropriate. So far I've found the sensitivity of the PIR to be just about right and the range is about 10m when the lantern is fitted about 3m above ground level. The advertised 140 degree detection range also seems about right.Only other comment is that the first lantern I was shipped had a broken retaining clip for one of the glass panels. Amazon shipped out a replacement on next day delivery and I now just need to return the damaged one via Collect+ within 30 days. The replacement had no issues.

Great light, great price
I have to say it raised a smile to read here that one person criticised this light for not being huge!! Massive is the name of the company that produces this light. It is a polite size, the lantern part being about 1 foot (33cm) from top nobble to bottom nobble.Visual instructions are supplied. The nobbles have to be attached by the user - the bottom one is supplied in a plastic bag and the top one is supplied screwed, for transit, to the inside of the top of the lantern. Be careful to place the keyed rubber washer correctly on the top of the lantern and re-insert the top nobble, fastened with the screw from below.Installation is relatively easy for someone with some DIY skills. There are no mounting screws or rawl plugs supplied, which may throw some people. The light is screwed to the wall through two holes in the back of the sensor housing. These holes have to be drilled out first (these are supplied blanked out with thin, but brittle plastic). There is a rear cable entry point with a rubber grommet which should be punctured with a screwdriver to enable a good seal around the cable. I recommend wrapping the lantern in protective newspaper or such like to stop the lantern getting scratched on the wall whilst wiring up (or a colleague to hold the lantern - even better!).The lantern has small adjusting points either side of the sensor. These are for sensitivity to darkness and for duration of 'light on' time once triggered. They are supplied adjusted so that testing can be carried out in daylight. Once tested, the on duration can be set by trial and error. Then adjust the darkness sensitivity, again by trial and error.Sensitivity of the PIR sensor is very good from both the side and front. The bulb (not supplied) can be an ordinary E27 electricity guzzler bulb or an E27 energy saving one. I have an 8W E27 LED bulb installed in mine, and it works really well - and will outlast any ordinary bulb. For those wondering if this can be set (like some PIR lights) to stay on permanently by switching the electricity feed off and on within a few seconds - there is no mention of this in the instructions - and my own experiments suggest that it does not behave in this way.Overall I'm very happy with this purchase. It seems so far to be a reliable, smart light at a very good price.

Good looking and good quality item, need to pay attention when installing it
It does what it says in the ad, the motion detector works well after I have set the darkness limit and the lenght of ON time. The 2 setting dials could be a bit bigger, but you`ll find them. You cannot set the distance for the motion detector, it is around 3-5 meters - depending on weather and light conditions. It is a nice, well-made item, not some cheap plastic thing. The only challenge was the installation: you need to first separate and fix the back side of the device to the wall, and then bolt the whole light on to this already fixed part, while also connecting the wires to the light. It requires some attention and putting some bolts in place without the nuts, before putting the back side and the light together on the wall. The connectors are properly labelled, so it was easy to identify which wire from the wall goes in which connector. I use it with a big LED bulb from the local supermarket.

works ok looks great at side of front door
looks expensive out side the front door ,I previewed the reviews before making a purchase and have agree with all the review fitting comments made, its fiddly to fit and a second pair of hands are needed, the colour wiring in the lamp did not match the position shown plain diagram in the fitting instruction sheet ,.so i made a phone call to the suppliers sorry we only sell them i will give you their number and you will have to contact philips electronics, so a call to the customer service at philips on contact a lady asked can you give me the make and model number gave over all the information explained the wiring difference, after some time so sorry i can not find any information on the lamp can you photo the problem email to us ref ******* and we will look into the matter .i just gave up, the light is half fixed to the wall so connected and finished fitting the lamp connected to mains switched on and the lamp works great ,tempted to get one for the other side of the door , so do not take any notice of wiring instructions just fit it. its no worry its under guarantee .

Slightly smaller that other PIR lanterns but does the job.
Although slightly smaller that the lantern it was replacing (due to a effective PIR sensor) it still does the job. The sensor on this Massive lantern appears to work well. The only slight disappointment was that one of the main bolts that secures the lantern to its backplate was missing. I contacted the supplier direct to inform them and they said that it would probably take a long time for them to be able to obtain the bolt from the manufacturers and offered me a small discount on the original purchase price off Amazon if I wished to obtain a bolt myself from DIY store. I opted for the latter and received a prompt discount credit. So far the lantern appears to be working well and I am pleased with the purchase.

Just what I wanted
So far so good. No complaints about this light. The instructions are clear and connecting up is straightforward if you have some basic electrical skill ( It does replace an earlier, very similar light).Setting the two tiny adjustment control screws was a bit hit and miss but I got there. One controls the light level at which the light starts to operate and the other, the length of time for which it stays on once triggered. I managed to set this to about 90 seconds which is what I wanted.I used a low power LED lamp which must have a Edison Screw (ES) cap.

Excellent quality, easy to fit
This is an excellent outdoor light. Good quality aluminium, easy to fit. Easy to adjust for the time it stays on after triggering - we have it at about 10 minutes. A little bit more difficult to adjust for sensitivity of the PIR so that it doesn't go off when people walk past the house, but our situation is a bit difficult, with the house front door less than 2m from the pavement. The light has been up outside our front door for 7 months now, and still looks (and works) as good as new. The light always operates in sensor mode - there's no extra wire for an override to force the light on or off - but in practice that's not really an issue. In any case I was using it to replace an existing manual light, so there was no existing wiring or switch for an override. I fitted it with a cool white LED bulb, and it looks great at night, and lights up the front door steps brightly for very little electricity. A very good product, especially at this price. And I did spend hours looking at all the others on-line before buying!

Outdoor PIR Lantern
For the price the build quality is OK, Re installation I found it better to remove the body from the mounting plate, just remove the wires from the chock block. The bolts that hold the mounting plate to the lantern should be longer as they tend to push back causing the nuts to be difficult to secure, OK on a smooth surface but with pebble dash walls not so easy. Operation and setting up is easy, just two small screws to set the time delay and light sensitivity.
