The hat gets 5 stars. The packaging will get 1. I never expect S,M,L hats to fit as well as sized hats (7 1/4; 7 1/2 etc). And not every 7 1/4 will fit like every 7 1/4 hat. I ordered a large and it is sized pretty accurately According to hat size I'm on the small side of "large" and this hat fits well. But anytime you order a hat on-line you should assume there's a decent chance you'll have to send it back. That's just the way it is. As for the hat. It's a great inexpensive hat that looks great. I've had good comments every time I've worn it. I'm very happy with it and recommend it. Note the leather stap in the brim. Some probably won't like that. If your hat shows up dinged and dented from shipping, try gently hold it over a steaming tea pot and slowly shape it. It would be great if hats were shipped in hat boxes but judging from Amazon reviews many aren't. Mine definitely wasn't. It came in a box 2x too big with a few piece of bubble wrap thrown in. Not the way to send a hat. The seller assured me it was the fulfillment center's fault. They could do a much better job.

Was a good quality, comfortable well fitted hat

Beautiful hat and fits very comfortably.

Wonderful perfect hat but was dented and bent in some areas. My third hat like this and the design is still one of the best. The shipping and packing is the issue

The hat is light and durable. A great hat for the price but my head is 22.5-22.75. The recommendation from the site was a medium. Well i should have read the reviews that said fit as expected/ tight. Medium is too small for sure. It rides a half an inch higher on my head than i want. Sits too high too tight. My fault.

Good hat, size runs small. Advantages: Good quality wool, well constructed. Lower crown and moderate brim afford protection without being too cumbersome in and out of vehicles and such. Warm and relatively light weight. Works for its purpose and in accord with its design, but not for extreme sun or hot temperature protection. Winter snow and rain are its forte. Disadvantages: Size runs small so deducted one star. Best to order next size up (for me from large to x-large), and then add band pad (available here on Amazon) if absolutely needed. Sizing may be small'ish because hat is treated with rain repellent and might shrink just that little bit as a result. If already have this style and want to keep even if a bit small, hat stretchers are not costly and also available on Amazon. CAUTION: If do use a stretcher will pop the hatband since it is just stapled together and fits tightly. But lots of good looking bands available at low price. Just takes a smidge (really just a drop) of clear fabric glue in a couple of places to keep the aftermarket band secure. Many committed hat-wearers (I'm one) generally don't like the original band of most "active style" hats (as opposed to the 'ribbon band" of more dressy styles) anyway, so often order a replacement band at same time as the hat. Good purchase if understand limitations, rapidly exiting inventories it seems.
