Samurai Jack: The Complete Series (Blu-ray)

This is truly something special
If anything this is the equivalent avatar the last Day offender at least when it comes down to tone and quality of the kind of show it is though it's not like cartoon Network don't have shows of this kind a lot of times considering they also had justice league and teen titans. Either way I'm very happy to finally take the time out to check the show out but I also need to look at the creators of our work primal. Maybe I'll consider checking that out as well as well as including it in my collection.

Fantastic box set, amazing show, great deal!
I got this while it was on sale for $60.Without a doubt, especially for that price, this particular box set is worth it. It contains all 5 seasons. The box it comes in is sturdy and each season comes in its own blu ray case with nice artwork.Perhaps the most stand out thing about this is that it also comes with a digital copy of all 5 seasons - essentially doubling its value. I can now have the complete series in a collectible box set, safe in storage, while watching it digitally on Vudu. It’s worked flawlessly and I couldn’t be happier. My only disclaimer to this is that most digital codes at some point expire, so if you’ve been on the fence about purchasing this and the option of also owning this digitally is appealing to you, it might be worth doing so before it’s too late.As for the show itself:Samurai Jack is one of the most creative, subdued yet bombastic when it needs to be, under-the-radar shows I’ve ever seen. Whether you’re a fan of anime or animation in general, this show is a love letter to the genre and to anyone with an appreciation for art, samurai, action, and sci-fi.While keeping an overarching, simple-yet-understandable narrative, most episodes play as independent stories that mostly all come to a respective conclusion by the time the credits roll - each taking you to near limitless locations, locales, styles, etc. The show also does something I’ve rarely ever seen done in any other animation, let alone tv show in general, and that is that it allows for minutes to pass by at times with little going on at all - moments where you watch scenery and listen to the superb audio whether it be the nuanced score or the painstakingly real sound effects (i.e., water dripping, steel on steel, machines whirring, drums beating in the distance, wind and leaves rustling). There’s something to be said about this. It’s not done enough in my opinion and strikes a right balance in the show - it feels right and elevates Samurai Jack far above where it would be if it fell into the trappings all too many other shows do in terms of thinking they constantly need to be swiftly moving along with action and/or dialogue to keep the viewers attention. There’s humor, action, suspense, drama and, at the center of it all, a narrative that anyone with a heart can connect with - a man trying to find his way, attempting to fight evil, to return home, to right the wrongs that have befallen him and his people.I’m half-way through season 4 and I’m so excited to someday watch this again with my son as he gets older - the show is very clean, save for action sequences. Though one more disclaimer is that I’ve heard/read that Season 5 introduces some profane language and blood that the previous seasons did not contain. Keep that in mind!I can’t say enough good things about the show or this box set. I’m so glad I pulled the trigger on it when I did. It looks like the price has went up significantly since, but I’m sure with some patience you could find a new copy elsewhere? Or perhaps Amazon will eventually restock and maybe there will be another sale. Regardless, it’s worth it. Absolutely worth it.

Favorable Classic!
Loved this show ever since it first aired on tv and now was so happy it got a 5th season to bring a conclusion to the story. The box is such a great look and the discs looked super clean. So happy with this purchase.

Ever so slightly jacked...
I haven't worked through the whole series yet as I don't believe a show with this high level of quality should be consumed like a twenty-piece nugget at McD's. That said, here are my impressions thus far.The sound is pristine. I'm watching with a pair of headphones so I can't speak to the open-air experience, but given that the show painstakingly incorporates sound to create it's world, the audio here is fantastic with clean highs and bassy lows.Like the audio, the visuals are pin-prick sharp. I haven't watched the show since it's original run and am very impressed at the level of detail I was apparently missing on the first go-round. Being able to see the texture of the actual paper and brush strokes used in the background paintings very much adds to the sense that this art to be appreciated. As for the show itself, it is as near to perfect as can be. The narrative and action takes whatever time is necessary to establish a scenes mood, be it contemplative or combative. The episodes were not created with binge-watching in mind however, so I'd advise limiting your viewing sessions so as to not let some of the shows more repetitive devices become tiresome; i.e. for a man with a great degree of self-control, Jack seems to lose his temper in nearly every episode (kind of like Spock in ST: TOS).So Audio is wonderful, Visuals are sumptuous and the show is masterfully executed, then why only four stars? Two reasons: packaging and digital content. Don't get me wrong, I think the packaging looks quite handsome and would fit well into ones collection especially if it was on display. But it is wasteful; each of the five seasons is on one disc and each gets it's own individual full size blu-ray case. With the outer case being the size of five blu-ray cases one would reasonably expect more discs or at least some sort of booklet. It is a complete set after all. However, I've recently seen a revamped package of similar but much slimmer design which is encouraging. The other (minimal) gripe is the lack of digital versions; there were no codes included, as others have mentioned. If you are looking for digital codes I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere. I chose this specific set after reading other reviews stating that it was the only one to include codes. But of course, if you're only here for the content and don't mind extraneous packaging these discs deliver superbly.
