I think Amazons recommended size is based on your telling them how tall and how much you weigh, you have to love algorithms. Or not.

Q: I am 72" tall, do have size 16 Long, and what are the inseem lengths you sell?

I’m 71” and the regular length fits me perfectly.

Q: I’m 5’9” and weigh 160. What size would I wear?

I'm 5'9 & 185, I wear size 14. The waist was super tight at first (I could not zip or button them at all) but I wore them around the house like that and they started stretching. Eventually I was able to zip & button them. Now I wear them every single day, they're my favorite jeans.
