Action! Cartooning

Excellent
I purchased this and the Fantasy! Cartooning book. I really wanted to polish my drawings and they looked like great resources for 'finding my style'.I'd be considered a beginner/intermediate artist, and these benefited me greatly. Definitely work through this book before Fantasy! Cartooning. You can think of that book as an expansion pack rather than a sequel. Fantasy! Cartooning is merely tips on tweaking your style and filled with a bunch of example drawings. If you're on a budget, you can completely skip that book. (Though I still like it and keep it handy for reference.)Now Action! Cartooning on the other hand is a goldmine of resources for beginners. He goes over everything from breaking down gestures and cartoon anatomy for beginners. Gives the basics on drawing Emotions and gives a nice resource of eye/nose/mouth styles to study. It's written to be easy to understand and filled with humor. He makes it fun! This is a great crash course on Cartooning basics. It greatly helped improve my art and drawing from my imagination. Definitely pick this book up! Now I recommend doing some figure study before cartooning though. You really need a basic understand of human anatomy before starting cartooning. Trust me. Get some books for that as well. I picked up How to Draw the Human Figure and basically drew an assload of nude people for awhile before cartooning, and still do. It helps a TON.

Great book for someone interested in action adventure cartoons
I am a beginning artist that enjoys drawing superheroes and action adventure characters. While looking on amazon for books about drawing comics and cartoons I happened to come across this book. I read other reviews about it and they were all excellent so I decided to get it. While reading the description it said it focused on superheroes and their environment so that is what really drew me to it. Once I got it I immediately skimmed through it to see what I was in for and let me tell you it is exactly what I was looking for. In the beginning it covers how to draw faces, modifying parts of the faces, and different face types. Then it eventually transitions to body types, proportions, anatomy, and action poses. Although the book is about 96 pages long, it is filled with great info on every page and some great tips and step by step guides.

Really Great!
I took art classes for a year and wish I had this book before I expended all that time and energy. The classes made me more creative but I didn't learn the structure. This book gives you the foundation to make your drawings look right. Starting with cartooning helps you to get to the heart of the subject. Then once you can start drawing things that you are happy with, you gain the confidence to keep going. Also, his style is cool and right on. His ideas are energetic and inspiring. He reworks ideas from ancient civilizations and imaginary realms to make amazing new characters. Very much worth it.

LIGHTS! CAMERA! Hold on a second!
This is a great book for an artist who has some experience already drawing the human figure looking to flesh out their skills in the world of cartooning. The book gives you all the hints and tips you need to take a human and make them a bit more cartoony, showing the action inherent in the scene, and whatever else it is that makes action cartoons tick.Unfortunately, as a novice artist? This was only helpful in helping me draw the exact figures they have in the book. I can now walk through and recreate almost anything in the book but taking it to the next step? That's just not there for me.I don't blame the book for this. It really is a great tool for getting to the next step in cartooning, but I guess I just needed something a little more basic.

great book - great style
Ive always loved the semi-cartoony style of artists like Ryan Dunlavey and Ben Caldwell. I always wanted to learn how to draw this way. when i saw this book on amazon, i was amazed at how lucky I was to find it! once i got It, i started using it right away. it was a great book and i learned ssssooooo much from it that i wouldve otherwise never known. this book improved the quality of my drawings so much more than i couldve imagined and i bet it can to the same to yours.

Great Buy Emphasizing the Basics
Good starter book that leaves you plenty to practice but doesn't overwhelm with too many details. If you're looking for a more in depth book, this is not it. However, I think one can glean a lot from the drawings with what is explained and not explained. He uses anatomy on a limited level to explain why drawing figures should look a certain way. I wish he would have taken a few more pages to explain some more thing about anatomy and positioning characters, but that can be for other books and for the artist to practice.

Great book for any cartoonist!
This book has become my go to whenever i need reference on cartooning! As a freelance artist, i've spent years trying to craft my own style. When i got this book, it really opened my eyes to just how much i could push things and still have them look good. I now have this book right next to my workspace at all times, ready for when i need a quick refresh of ideas!

excellent instructional guide
one of the most important books in my art reference library. Ben Caldwell offers clear insight into form and dynamics, with stylized diagrams and informative instruction. the emphasis on observation and understanding of principles is designed to teach a student to focus on individual style, rather than simply emulating the instruction. the concepts of cartooning, and 'art' in general are difficult to define, but this book is an excellent guide.

Cartoon and Caricature Best Guide
I recommend it to animation students, or anyone involved in the process of learning how to make cartoons. I have seen few books already, this one is best in the market. It is probably meant for kids, but I find it useful for people who are on their way to be professional very soon.It explains how to exaggerate, in other words how to achieve the best caricature to express desirable features of characters created. It's down to earth, practical with humour and simplicity. And of course, very well drawn by the master Ben Caldwell.
