Does this connect wireless to the control unit or is it a physical connection? my sprinklers are about 50m away from the tap.

This control unit uses a physical wired connection to the control valve. Suggest you check other Gardena products that use wireless connectivity.

How long would would the battery last for ? (Approximately)

It ran all summer. In the autumn, I took the batteries out and will refit the unit in the spring. I am reasonably confident that they will still have some life.
