Back to the future
Just a few short years ago, the first port of call for any medical problem would be your Doctor, with perhaps a glance into a medical encyclopaedia first. These days, before seeking professional help, it's common practice to try some 'self-help' first and trawl the internet to see how other people have tackled the same problem and if you've been missing anything in terms of medication or exercise techniques. I suffered a trapped nerve in my neck around six months ago and went first to the Doctor who prescribed an anti-depressant (I'm not depressed, but they apparently relax the nerves). When that failed, I started with a private chiropractor. He detected some issues with my spine and over a period of some weeks, pushed and prodded me back into shape. The trapped nerve, however, persisted. I eventually wound up with an NHS physiotherapist and some weeks later, was given the all clear. Two weeks ago, the exact same thing recurred. The pain at night is intense, so I searched the internet to try and find something that might help relieve the problem. That's when I found the Trigger Point Grid Foam Roller at Amazon. The price struck me as fairly high, but the reviews were so positive and I was so desperate for help, that I was willing to try anything if I thought it might offer me some relief. When I first opened the package, I will admit to being slightly underwhelmed. The product is basically a rigid plastic cylinder, wrapped in a foam grid and my initial reaction was that £35 seemed a lot of money for such a simple looking product. Not that it's unattractive - the product is all in black with the inside of the plastic tube coloured bright green. The foam outer is in the form of a grid, with raised areas and channels running between them. It is apparently the channels that allow more blood flow when exercising and thus speed up any recovery. The first time I used it, I concentrated on the back and neck. I simply put the roller on the floor, laid on top of it and then rolled it underneath me, up and down my spine. The roller is very firm and at times, could actually be described as slightly painful, but the interesting thing was that I could feel and hear vertebrae 'clicking' back into place, which is exactly what any chiropractor would do. When I'd finished, my back was tingling all over, as if I'd had a really good massage. It was at this point that I knew I'd made the right purchase. At £35, the cost is exactly the same as a 15 minute session with my chiropractor and when viewed in that light, the price suddenly starts to look much more reasonable. I'm not suggesting for one minute that this product should replace sound medical advice, but in terms of self-help, I think it's outstanding. I'm now using the roller every couple of days and although my trapped nerve hasn't quite disappeared, it is much better. My spine also feels much stronger and as someone who has suffered back pain in the past, I'm in no doubt that used regularly, this will help to keep my back in good order. I've also been using it on my shoulders, by lying on it slightly to one side and working the areas in the same way as the back, and also as a warm down after playing squash, by running my calves and thighs over the roller which definitely reduces stiffness the following day. You don't need to be an athlete to use the Trigger Point Grid Foam Roller, but you do need some core strength to raise your body off the floor with the roller underneath your back and to then use your legs to power your body up and down the roller. Before buying, I'd suggest watching the YouTube videos that are available to determine that it's going to be suitable for you. I'm hugely impressed with the Trigger Point Grid Foam Roller. It's one of those products that just does what it claims to do and also one you can't truly appreciate until you've tried it for a period of time. It feels extremely well made and I would expect it to last me for a number of years. Even with my full body weight on the roller, it feels incredibly strong and secure. I'm just so glad I found it. My chiropractor may feel differently.

Recommended by my Physio
I recently started physio for a niggling knee injury (patella tendonitis) My physio suggested that my left hip, ITB muscle and calf were very tight and could be causing my patella to pull slighlty left and rub against my knee joint/bone. She advised that to help this i should perform a number of stretches and also use one of these to massage out the ITB muscle (Long muscle that runs down the side of the leg - i believe) So far it's been good, it hurts a little when using this but seems to replicate what a massage could do to a certain level. It's also great to use on other muscles and parts of the body, for example the back. In my routine I've actually started using it on these areas just because i can and it feels nice. It's got a solid build quality, mine is the smaller version so quite compact and fits into my burton rucksack. I opted for the smaller one for portability but they offer a larger one too. Personally i think it's a little overpriced (£33) but certainly does what it suggests. I paid this much as my physio recomended it....you could use an air freshner can / deodorant can to get a similar effect but onbviously you would lose out on the comfort factor of the outer rubber on this item. I would recommend this and if you can get it for around £20-25 then go for it definately!

Does the job!
I have been practicing Tae Kwon Do for several years now, and the TriggerPoint Grid Foam Roller has become an indispensable part of my training routine. From the moment I started using it, I noticed a significant improvement in my recovery time and overall muscle flexibility. The multi-density exterior is ingeniously designed to mimic the feel of a massage therapist's hands, which helps to target and release tight knots in the muscles. Whether I'm working on my quads, hamstrings, or back, the different textures provide varied levels of pressure, making it highly effective. The rigid core ensures that the roller maintains its shape even after extensive use, which is crucial for someone who engages in high-intensity workouts like Tae Kwon Do. One of the standout features of this foam roller is its compact size. It is easy to carry around, whether to the gym or during travel, ensuring that I can always have it on hand for a quick session. Despite its size, it offers exceptional durability and doesn't lose its firmness, which is a common issue with other foam rollers I've tried in the past. Using the TriggerPoint Grid Foam Roller regularly has helped me alleviate muscle soreness and prevent injuries. It has become a vital tool in my warm-up and cooldown routines, enhancing my performance and allowing me to train more effectively. The instructional videos provided by TriggerPoint are also a great addition, offering guidance on how to maximize the benefits of the foam roller. In summary, the TriggerPoint Grid Foam Roller is a fantastic investment for anyone serious about their athletic training, especially for martial artists like myself. Its thoughtful design, durability, and effectiveness make it a must-have for achieving optimal muscle health and performance.

Quality piece of kit worth the money
I’m 100kg and often found when using other rollers they would lose shape, this one is rock solid. The booklet that comes with it with instructions for different parts of the body is really useful. Quality piece of kit.

This is an easy 5 star review review for me. I utterly love this product and would buy another in a heartbeat, should my current roller meet its tragic end saving children from a burning building. Yes, I believe it has the ability to do so. Let's start with some fundamental questions. Do you have a foam roller from [insert pharmacy here]? Does it have little divots from constant use after, say, a month? Better yet, are you looking for a roller and don't currently have one? Then have I got a sales pitch borne of personal experience for you. The thing is amazing. I'm on a physiotherapy routine where I have to stretch my quads 4-5 times a day. Since I'm used to it, I've now developed a routine where I roll my hip flexors, glutes, calves, and whatever else is sore along with them. I never miss a roll. After a month, my original roller was starting to bend, which made rolling feel slightly uneven. I hated the feeling and was thusly left with three options. 1. Suck it up (not really an option since I'm a bit of a princess) 2. Buy a dense foam roller, which is essentially a thicker version of your average roller, or 3. Buy the long lasting, semi-massaging Trigger Point Roller. I'm glad I went with the Trigger Point. Because of its construction, there's no way it can bend inward over time. I mean, it's a thin layer of synthetic material over a hard plastic tube... it just physically can't. I bought the 13-inch version, which is perfect for me. I can fit it in my gym bag and roll out after a hard workout. At 5'7", 135lbs, I can easily roll both quads at a time. Basically, it's large enough to accommodate any muscle that you require and small enough to transport with ease. If you know that you'll be rolling at home 100% of the time and have both the money and a large enough area to use, I'd recommend getting the 26 inch just because it's more to love of an already stellar product. Honestly, the fact that it feels like you're receiving a mild massage is a fringe benefit. Brass tax, this thing is an excellent roller and costs a fraction more what you'll already be paying for any other product. If you're looking for a serious roller, then look no further. Small bonus tip - If you find there's an area (lower back, hip flexors) that is a little hard to get deeply into with a foam roller, I highly recommend buying a lacrosse ball. They are unbelievably great for myofascial release (super cheap, too). For $10 bucks or less, they're among the best therapy tools I've ever owned. STX Lacrosse Balls, White, 2 Pack Update 11/19/2015: After a few months of use, the roller is showing zero sign of warping, and it's unlikely it ever will due to the construction materials; whereas, my generic pharmacy roller developed a major divot after only a month of use. Update 02/17/2016: Still using consistently. Still ZERO markings/denting. This thing is awesome. Update 09/02/2016: My physio therapist started stocking this exact model a couple of months back. He now purchases them over your ordinary blue rollers. If that isn't progress, I don't know what is.
