Great Collection...
I watch every Tom Hanks movie. Even though I had watched all of these many years ago, I know I will be watching them again. Great movies and DVD.

Valupak Worth the Price
As a rule, I don't like to buy what I call valupak DVDs, collections that include multiple movies. There are elements that can occur in these purchases, like double-sided recordings, plain disks, and disks not labelled or done so with tiny writing that folks with anything but 20/20 vision can barely read, that I dislike. Rarely, do these disks include any bonus materials, either, and I love the extras. However, this set was on sale for $4.99. That's three Tom Hanks movies, two of which I'd seen and enjoyed to some extent, so I figured it was worth the risk.Well, I'm pretty happy with the result. The Money Pit was on its own disk. I remember this film from its release and seeing it in the theater. Shelley Long co-starred and on the whole, it was a nice romantic comedy and suitable for the family. There's some funny physical elements to the picture. My favorite is probably when Hanks climbs up the stairs and the staircase collapses. I was pleased the disk included the trailer and a featurette on the making of the movie that had some interviews amid the other information provided.I was pleased again when the second disk was not plain silver, but labelled as clearly as disk one was, including the name of both films on it. It was single sided, which made me happy. Now some people complain about shows being compressed or otherwise altered to fit on one disk. I don't have that perception gene. All I care about is that I can see and hear the movie without issues or obvious problems, so I can't really tell if there was any difference between how the two movies on this disk played here versus on a dedicated disk.Disk two has The 'Burbs and Dragnet on it. I'd never seen The 'Burbs before and was worried the humor might not be to my liking, but overall, it had its moments and nothing made me cringe much. I'd read about the movie before watching it, so knew a little of what to expect. It had a good cast that also included Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Henry Gibson, and even Corey Feldman, who fit right in. There was an extra included beyond the trailer, too. This was an alternate ending that had been filmed. I found that to be very interesting and also discovered that I would have preferred an ending that was a mix of the actual and alternate. Some of the shots were better in the alternate in terms of angle and position as well as dialog included, but I'm glad they went with the final in terms of plot resolution. I read that originally the Tom Hanks character was supposed to die, but once Hanks was cast, the powers that be felt audiences wouldn't respond well to his character biting the dust. They made a smart choice. The final film in the collection was Dragnet, which I also saw back in the day. I saw it with some trepidation that it would parody its namesake in an unkind manner, but it didn't. Some things were borderline and probably had Jack Webb growling, but for the most part, the movie honored the TV show it was based on. Harry Morgan even appeared as Captain Gannon. Oh, this isn't a remake. Dan Aykroyd played Joe Friday's nephew with Hanks as his new partner. Some of the bits are super funny. Some, as I said, were on the border. Unfortunately, there was nothing regarding this movie that was extra, but it did include the trailer. So, for a valupak collection at $4.99, this proved to be a good purchase for me.

The Burbs!!
1989's The 'Burbs (written by Dana Olsen and directed by Joe Dante) follows a week in the life of Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) attempting a 'Staycation' in his quiet cul-de-sac of Mayfield Place. His week of rest is quickly shattered because his nosey neighbors Art Weingartner (played by Rick Ducommun) and an Army veteran named Mark Rumsfeld (played by Bruce Dern) suspect that the Peterson's new introverted next door neighbors - the Klopeks - are Satan worshiping cannibals. The Klopeks - Uncle Reuben (played by Brother Theodore), Dr. Werner Klopek (Henry Gibson), and Hans Klopek (Courtney Gains) - are wonderfully mysterious with their thick and ambiguous Eastern European accents and eccentric housekeeping. After convincing a skeptical Ray, the three devise a plan to find out just what it is the Klopeks are doing in their basement, and just what did they bury in their backyard late one night? The movie stars Tom Hanks at what I think is the height of his comedic arc, after a series of great movies he is leaving the 1980s on top. As Ray Peterson, he is stressed and overworked and just wants to relax and enjoy some nice time off from work. He loves the quiet and peaceful setting of his suburban environment. Unfortunately, his neighbors Art and Mark ruin this idyllic sense in their attempts to convince Ray that his neighbors really are Satanic murderers.Tom Hanks' delivery and comedic timing are impeccable and carries the movie. But not in a way that overshadows his co-stars, as they answer his deliveries with equal funny lines and over-the-top madcap action. Ray's wife Carol (Carrie Fisher) provides the sensible rational side of things, trying to convince the group that the Klopeks are just different and that they only need to get to know them. Once she decides to leave to go visit out of town family, Ray is left to be completely overtaken by the idea that his neighbors really are Satanic murderers, and sets out with Art and Mark to prove it.This movie was shot on a single set at Universal Studios and takes place all within the set - the plot never moves outside of the small cul-de-sac in which the neighbors all live. I've always loved that simple aspect of this movie as it feels like watching an old episode of The Twilight Zone. Along with an excellent soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith that pokes fun of his other works, such as Patton ([...]), it's easy to get taken to the world of Mayfield Place. The director, Joe Dante, also directed a few other movies that have a place in my heart and childhood - The Twilight Zone Movie, Gremlins and Gremlins 2, and Innerspace. The movie did decently enough at the box office, but was widely panned by critics. I think it's a campy and often overlooked film that is fun to watch at any time. It was one of those movies that was often playing on TV or on a movie channel as I was a kid, and I've seen it often. I've always thought that it was well-acted and hilarious and just not understood by those who do not like it. The movie is dark and weird, but somehow maintains a light and fun feeling all at the same time.

Bueno no me puedo quejar!
