Rustins Wood Dye Light Oak 250 ml

I bought this after trying several other brands, none of which gave satisfactory results. To my surprise, this turned out to be the perfect dye. It’s easy to apply and gives pine a warm, golden, slightly dark oak finish. Impressively, it doesn’t raise the grain, so there’s no real need to sand the surface after application. It transforms ordinary pine into something that looks far more expensive. You can use it directly without a pre-treatment, which results in a darker shade. If applied after a pre-stain conditioner, it produces a lighter oak tone. I’m genuinely impressed and will be using this for my upcoming projects.

I applied this to my wood dining table that was already oil treated. It went on like a dream and 1 coat used around a 3rd of the product. Before I applied a 2nd coat, I could see the colour was rubbing off in patches, so it will require a sealant. The colour is darker than three image shown but it really suits. The only reason I have given this 4 and not 5 stars is the smell which reminded me of a nail bar! Overall happy with this dye

So this is about the best you can buy, some of the new water based dye’s dry too quick leading to a disasterous finish, this however stays wet long enough to be able to get a nice finish without any irregularity! Dries in a couple hours, doesn’t smell to bad and gives a nice even look, use a lint free cloth for ease of application

We made a sideboard to go behind our sofa - it was very yellow 6x2 wood used (see in pic) and it’s come out a really nice warm oak colour. We got the LIGHT oak and I must admit it has come out quite dark after 3 coats but it’s the perfect colour for us so very happy. We oiled the wood before hand so the wood wouldn’t soak up loads of the stain. Very happy with it! I’ve used about half of the 250ml pot for this bit of wood which is about 2.5 meters long. It gets a bit darker in grooves / joins but that’s to be expected I guess

This was way too dark. I was expecting it to be much lighter as it was light oak. The picture shows only one coat. I am now having to bleach the wood to try to lift the colour. Should have tested on a spare piece first. That said, it goes on well and very easily and dries quickly, great coverage, just the colour thats an issue

Excellent stuff. Ridiculously easy to apply, it took seconds to dye a table top project using a fresh kitchen sponge. I bought light oak which is the colour it comes out as on pine. The swatch on the tin is misleading as to colour, it's a much nicer, lighter and oak like tint than it appears on the tin. It would of course depend what you use it on. It dries very quickly but does have a slightly muddy effect on pine with all the knots and what not. This does crisp up with a couple of coats of clear coat. I'm very impressed with it all round though and will try other colour on future projects. I won't be using paint on wood stain again that's for sure.
