Miyazaki's Origin - his First Original and Greatest Film
For foreigners, this title came later than Princess Monomoke and Spirited Away. But for Japanese, this one was the Miyazaki's first original feature film, which was released in 1984 and I saw it then. Many in my generation in Japan still believe this is his greatest film. After 25 years later, this movie still gives me the same strong inspiration: all of his consistent messages are here already. Nausicca embodies the greatest of human being: love and care for every creature without any preconception or discrimination; pure mind to see what is the most important things which make all of us to co-exist in the world; and courage to act on her belief. I always think of her when I hear all the difficulties which we are facing now for climate change and sustainability.Mitazaki directed various TV cartoon series in Japan during the 1970s and I grew up with them (how lucky!). Of course, I did not care who was making these great anime shows. Many were broadcasted in other countries, so you may know them. I just enjoyed their beautiful stories, drawings and music. His first feature film, The Castle of Cagliostro, was released in 1979 in Japan (a very fun movie, although the story was not his original, I do strongly recommend this one too. This was the film version of a very popular TV anime series in Japan, Lupin the Third).I do not go into the content of this film because other people already explained beautifully, but I really recommend Nausicca to everyone as the origin of Miyazaki films. This film was also the first collaboration between Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi (his music composer and director). Joe was very little known in Japan before this movie, but this film's immense success made him one of the most successful composers in Japan too! Please enjoy his music as well.

Nausicaa, recommended by Japanese
I am Japanese, living in London for 12 years. I still remember how stunned I was when I watched my first Ghibli film (Nausicaa) in Tokyo - I was 13, and everyone at school was talking about it. I have recently watched most of the works by Ghibli on DVD, and again pleasantly surprised how much they can move a cynical 36 years old.I have watched all of their works, and I can safely say that Nausicaa is simply the best.A small thing to mention - When you watch any Studio Ghibli work, can I suggest you watch it in Japanese with English subtitles? I (with my friends) watched each one in English and in Japanese and found that the English dabbed versions are not as good as the originals - they have thrown in some unnecessary lines and left out necessary lines (Kiki's is the worst. They added extra music/sound effects!) Some may find the sound of Japanese a tad annoying from time to time, but if you'd like to enjoy the films to the full, please go for the subtitles. If you liked Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle (both young Sophie and old Sophie are acted by the same actress, by the way), please watch The Castle of Cagliostro (pronounced as ka-rio-suto-ro in Japan for some unknown reason) Nausicaa, Laputa as well. As a matter of a fact, they are much more highly appreciated in Japan even though they were created 2 decades ago.Have a great watch!

A LOST MEMORY
I saw this film as a child, when it was named "valley of the winds" and for years looked for it on and off, thats how long it stayed with me. I was so pleased to find this again and bought it right away, and to my delite i was not dissapointed to find that it was still a fantastic film.Set in a barron world 1000 years after man brought it to the brink of destruction, NAUSSICA is the story of kind hearted princess forced into her fate, the saviour in the war between man and mother natures warth, its an indepth story of morals and although told in a myths and legend way, is easy to follow. the animation is first class and the musical score haunting, for any anime fan this is a must have, and for anyone looking to try, this is a must have!!The english dubbing doesnt in anyway let the original down and the voice over cast is superb, there is a load of extras on the DVD and even other trailers, which can point new fans in the right direction, all in all, a great film and better DVD.

As fresh as a daisy
After being blown away by `Princess Mononoke', `Spirited Away', `Howl's Moving Castle' and a couple of other Studio Ghibli movies, I was really looking forward to viewing this earlier offering from that same studio. And in only a couple of ways does this film show its age and mark `Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind' as being one of the first films in this studio's collection- (1) The soundtrack is pure 80's techno, which I found to be the perfect accompaniment to the ecological/adventure plot and (2) Not only is the story as originally scripted as you would expect being one of Miyazaki's first stories, but it's also a fantastic adventure to boot. Somewhat surprising is that the animation is not one of the areas where this film appears dated- as I watched I found it incredible that this film could have been animated over twenty years ago. I don't know whether it's been digitally re-mastered, or if it's simply the transmission on DVD, but the animation is truly superb. If you wanted to be brutally honest you might say the occasional scenes involving movement are a little flatter in comparison with some of this director's most recent works, but in truth it's eye-poppingly glorious to view throughout and I especially marvelled at the insect creatures brought to life by the animators (the ominous `Ohmu' are particularly powerful). Strangely the DVD credits make no mention of the English speaking actors, perhaps because these voices were dubbed in 2004 with the release of this DVD, but still I would have expected some reference to their participation, especially since they're so proficient and well cast- Uma Thurman, Patrick Stewart and Alison Lohman stand out among them. A nostalgic breath of fresh air, unashamedly enjoyable.

Studio Ghibli is always great!
It's hard to believe this was made in 1984, the anime style is so good and the music by Joe Hisaichi just as great as his later Studio Ghibli stuff. And it's interesting with Hayao Miyazaki just retiring and finally getting some credit for his amazing work with "The Boy and The Heron", to see this, which I think is Miyazaki's first film with Studio Ghibli. As always, great characters, beautiful animation, wonderful music, and a haunting story that has deeper meaning. I look back to my childhood and wish I was watching this stuff instead of insipid Disney films, but I didn't discover anime until I was a parent!
