Its matte black so not shiny and very sturdy (looks very classy and the range of light from the adjustable light fitment is incredible from very light to subdued lighting). We like uplighters because they give a warm and diffused light to the room. The assembly however is dreadful. The threads are very fine and hard to align. For some time we tried, re-tried and couldn't get them screwed all the way, and there are four of these bits to screw into each other. Needs two as the bits are connected together with the cord that goes through the centre - so someone needs to hold up the bits not being screwed while the other turns the bit being screwed !! Comedy central! The top section, the light is still not all the way in but seems to be lodged well enough. Had enough so stopped there.
