The Poseidon Adventure is a 1972 American action-adventure disaster film, directed by Ronald Neame, produced by Irwin Allen, and based on Paul Gallico's novel of the same name. The film features an all-star cast, including five Academy Award winners: Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Albertson, Shelley Winters, and Red Buttons. The cast also includes Carol Lynley, Stella Stevens, Roddy McDowall, Leslie Nielsen, and in an early screen role, Pamela Sue Martin. It won a Special Achievement Academy Award for Visual Effects and an Academy Award for Best Original Song (for "The Morning After"). Shelley Winters won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role. It also received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama.The plot centers on the SS Poseidon, an aged luxury liner from the golden age of travel, on her final voyage from New York City to Athens before being sent to the scrapyard. On New Year's Eve, she is overturned by a tsunami caused by an underwater earthquake. Passengers and crew are trapped inside and a rebellious preacher attempts to lead a small group of survivors to safety.Parts of the films were filmed aboard the RMS Queen Mary, whose encounter with a rogue wave in 1942 inspired the book upon which the film is based.Boxoffice Magazine reported "The Poseidon Adventure" as the #1 Box Office Champ of 1973. By the end of 1974, it ranked among the six most successful features in film history, along with Gone with the Wind, The Godfather, Love Story, Airport, and The Sound of Music. It is in the vein of other all-star disaster films of the 1970s such as Airport and later ones like Earthquake and The Towering Inferno. It was remade twice, first as a television special in 2005 with the same name, and a theatrical release with the name Poseidon in 2006. A 1979 sequel, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, was released later with an equally star-studded cast, but was a box office and critical failure.The Poseidon Adventure is an excellent film with an all-star cast and a great storyline. I bought this film as a present for my dad a few years ago (I can't remember whether it was for his birthday or for Christmas). He heard from a colleague at work some time ago that the 2006 theatrical remake of The Poseidon Adventure, simply titled Poseidon, didn't do very well at all, but I wouldn't know about that as I've not seen it.Going back to The Poseidon Adventure, I very highly recommend this film, and even the not-so-successful sequel Beyond the Poseidon Adventure which starred Michael Caine.

On New Years Eve, the ocean liner SS Poseidon is hit by a tidal wave causing it to capsize. Floating in an inverted state in the sea, a hardy band of passengers led by Reverend Frank Scott, attempt to climb up to the engine room and hopefully to freedom. But inner fighting and a number of obstacles in their way are seriously hampering the survival bid.Producer Irwin Allen seemed to have single handedly created the disaster genre in the 1970s, here with The Poseidon Adventure, with Ronald Neame directing, he managed to take us into an upside down world of thrilling drama and none stop perils. The cast list may well be something to note, Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelley Winters, Roddy McDowell, Stella Stevens and Red Buttons, but really it's the sets and the fight for survival thru this watery labyrinthine that lifts the film above many of its genre peers. The picture has a very real feel to it, with the characters gradually getting you on side as they strive for survival, we have great work from Hackman and Borgnine as they vie for control of this disparate group, but we are with them all the way even tho we just know that this number will surely dwindle.The Poseidon Adventure 1972 was remade for the modern audience in 2006 with all the tools of the trade available to the makers, watching both films together it's not hard to see which is the most impressive, the 72 original has a vitality that modern blockbuster pictures can't quite grasp, and of course the technical aspects easily outstrip the CGI laden efforts of the later picture. Often seen as one of the leading lights of a much maligned genre, The Poseidon Adventure still packs a punch to this day, both in its craft and its emotional heart. 8/10

I first saw this on TV as a child in 1982 and it scared the pants off me, but loved it. Really memorable characters and top cast. In my opinion a superior production to The Towering Inferno by the same director. Good effects for the era, loads of atmosphere despite the surprisingly infrequent incidental music. Provided by John Williams, some of the theme reminds me of parts of the Star Wars soundtrack a few years later. Leslie Nielson was also a few years from his comedy roles lampooning this type of film but I managed to take him seriously. I'd also seen Superman for the first time in the early eighties, and it was interesting to see Gene Hackman, the bad guy from that playing the good guy (but slightly maverick priest) in this and very well. Great job from all in the cast and production.

I have see this film like others a million times but it's still one of the best film from the 70s

This review is for the Fox Home Entertainment BLURAY released 2014. I already have the film on DVD from some years ago, but at the current price (£8.99) here on Amazon, the chance for a BLURAY was hard to resist. Glad I got it - The quality of the transfer is excellent. Bright colour where appropriate and the darker scenes are easy to watch. The screen is Scope (bars top and bottom) and there are good optional English Subtitles (and again I thank Amazon Customer for including that info in his review. Amazon don't mention them. Incidentally - how come there are two "Amazon Customers"? Or are there more? One writes superb reviews, the other usually writes rubbish). For those of you who like extras, there are plenty including commentaries from Lynley Stevens and Martin and lots of mini docs and interviews. The film remains one of my all time favourite "disaster" movies, thanks to Ronald Neame's direction, the sets, the script, where every word counts, and of course the cast and the acting. They all come together to make a glorious 2 hrs of entertainment. If you haven't seen it - treat yourself. If you have, well, treat yourself to this BLURAY.

What a great movie. It came out when I was about 12 years old, and it was simply a joy to rewatch, especially with my kids (adult age) who were fascinated by the practical effects and storyline of the disaster movie that started a trend in the 1970's. Absolutely worth having in your DVD/Blue-Ray library.

This movie exemplifies what most modern movies have forgotten: a good plot that hooks viewers to care about the characters, and NO reliance on special effects. That's entertainment.

Es ist schon erstaunlich, was man vor 50 Jahren für einen Aufwand betrieben hat, um Katastrophen realistisch nachzustellen. Das gelingt heute trotz oder gerade wegen der vielen CGI-Effekte gar nicht mehr. Was den Schauspielern damals alles abverlangt wurde, ist unglaublich. Diese Filme kann man immer wieder ansehen und leider hat sich nichts geändert, was Skrupellosigkeit und Ignoranz von Vorgesetzten angeht.
